60 minutes blithering about how people become gay
Starts in the womb (it's mommy's fault because she's carrying "a foreign substance" :eyes: )

How ridiculous.

Even Clinton being the cause is more plausible, this is sheer fantasy garbage!

1. There is really a lot of nonsense being spouted today
about gender and sexual orientation. I hate having to leave and get ready for school tomorrow without being able to debate further on the issues. You are so right though. Many thoeries out there are just that; out there.

2. Did you catch the part
where they say, if you have a lot of older brothers, you chances of "becoming gay" increase...

4. I missed it. Besides, I'm an only child.
Makes that "older brother" excuse hard to come by...

9. Well, it is true, statistically
Now there is the correllation v. causation thingy. But over a population if one is male one has a higher % possibility of being gay for each older brother they have. This is not under dispute scientifically.

Now for a lot of gay folk research into the causes of homosexuality is scary. They fear being called diseased or things like that.

Now, the interesting question is whether or not "gayness" could be determined in the womb. Then assume the mother is a Rethug who hates gay folks. Would one then support her right to choose in that circumstance? It is her body, afterall.

I think the research is good because it proves that homosexuality is not jusat a lifestyle choice.

6. It isn't. They were making excuses and how mommy's body can
determine whether the offspring should be a boy or a girl...

It was asinine. (it's like the X and Y chromosome stuff never existed... though they did make a nod to "might be genetic because some have relatives who are also gay...")

Who cares why? Being gay isn't like having Downs' Syndrome.

17. From a biologists point of view
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 07:57 AM by LNS
which I am one, I think the hard explanation is how/why this trait would be established in and carried forward in a population. There's the old saying, "noting in biology makes sense EXCEPT when viewed through evolution". Homosexuality is obviously NOT advantageous for a fitness (reproduction) point of view. However, it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to expalin as there are plenty of lethal or detrimental genes in our DNA (with no judgement intended to this particular trait). Also we all know that it's not totally unheard of for homosexuals to have kids, so this would also potentially pass genes along as well.

I'm an ecologist by training and my M.S. thesis was on population genetics. My major professor came out to a bunch of us while we were in school. He was a geneticist and we all talked extensively about it over beers. Obviously, he'd done a lot of research in scientific journals looking for any sort of genetics related information he could find.

The most reasonable explanation I've heard, I THINK by S.J. Goould (but I not sure), is that in small bands of hunter/gathers that nieces and nephews of homosexuals would garner more resources that their aunts and uncles would provide them. Now since these nieces and nephews share 1/4 of their DNA with their aunts and uncles, this trait could be carried forward.

Now that we have the human genome mapped, I'm sure somebody is looking and if its there (which I'm guessing it is) they will find it. It's going to put quite a few bigots in a pickle when they do too....

7. I thought it was interesting, and plausible.

Can't be totally genetic, can it, if identical twins can be of the opposite sexual orientation? Hormonal makes more sense than saying it's a disease.

8. it's based on an actual study but the
chances of being gay is like one in seven and I don't know if that is even statistically significant just based on having a certain number of older brothers.

I'm not sure, but a statistician would know if it's enough of an increase to matter. I think it's an interesting study, I read about it several months ago.

16. My Dad is the youngest of 6 boys.
When this "research" first came out I told him about it, and he wrote back saying he had laughed his head off, since my Dad is as hopelessly straight as I am. :D

20. It's always Mommy's fault...
is that any different than DUers blaming J-B Ramsey's mother for her death because she entered her in beauty pageants, therefore making her attractive to pedophiles?

21. Why was that "garbage"?
I'm not a scientist nor a psychologist. I wouldn't make assumptions about things that are unknown to me.

I thought that segment was pretty interesting, actually.

the Flintstone vitamins, you'll grow up gay?
