Poll question: ***Artifact geeks: Have you ever seen a crystal arrowhead?***
Edited on Sun Aug-27-06 10:17 AM by wildhorses
I mean, have you ever seen an arrowhead carved out of a crystal quartz rock? Where did you see it? Who do you think carved it? What did you do with it? Would it be ok to wire wrap it and wear it as a necklace? Please!! Advice needed...

1. Found one in the Sierras
The MiWoks lived in that area so in all likelihood, that is who carved it. As far as I know, the ex still has it.

4. this one was found in the appalachin mountains
on a 100 acre piece of property...would that mean a cherokee carved it? the guy said he found only 3 on the whole place. He sold the other 2 on e-bay.

7. Yup......
Right here in West Virginia. Quartz crystals aren't all that uncommon around here, so the indigenous folks used it as raw material.

I see no reason you couldn't wire-wrap it and wear it. Structurally, quartz crystal isn't as strong as chert so its utility would have been limited, so there is little risk of you spoiling some kind of history. However, you may want to look around where you found it and see if you spot more quartz tools. If you find a fair amount, you might want to contact your state's SHPO (State Historic Preservation Office) and let them know because you may have come across an archaeological site. I used to be an archeologist, so I have seen projectile points made from all kinds of crazy things.

Hope this helps.

8. thanks for the info....truth is: I didn't find it. The guy I am dating
found it on his property a few years ago. He had purchased a hundred acres in the Appalachin Mtns. He found three or four. He gave me this one. The others he sold on e-bay. IIRC he sold one for about $100 and another one for about $600. He figured this one to worth about $400:wow:

I have no idea the value of these things. I just like it cos it is beautiful and the fact he gave it to me. I wanted a way to keep it close to me and not just hide it away in a keepsake box.
