I'm watching a Pink Floyd tribute band on PBS
and I'm reminded of something Charles Emerson Winchester once said in a "MASH" episode:

"I can play the notes, but I cannot make the music."

It sounds like Pink Floyd, but something's just... missing.

1. They aren't Pink Floyd.
A tribute band is great...a wonderful tribute. But...it's that intangible something that makes the difference.

2. Yeah
The woman hosting the pledge breaks goes, "They've got Pink Floyd down pat." And I'm like, "Well, no..."

The guitarist is playing the notes accurately; he's even getting the bends and stuff right. But even if I didn't know it wasn't Pink Floyd, I'd know it wasn't Gilmour. You just can't duplicate that sound. It's his, and it's unmistakeable.

The only tribute "band" I've ever heard that did justice to the original was Randy Hansen, who covered Hendrix. I think he had a bit of Hendrix's soul in him.

4. Atomic Punks do a fairly convincing Van Halen imitation.

In fact David Lee Roth has even drafted two of their guitarists to tour with him.

3. Is this the Aussie Pink Floyd Tribute?
I've heard that they are excellent at what they do, but how could they live up to the original.

But then, neither could the David Gilmour Band (posing as Pink Floyd) that released those two albums in recent years and then cashed in on a series of live albums heavily dependent on songs they didn't write. :hide:

6. That's the one
Mechanically, they've got it — well, except for the vocal, which is hardest to reproduce. But the feeling isn't there.

It's like this...

...compared to this.

8. Yeah, I hear you
Who decided on this whole "retro" car thing anyway? Granted most of them look very cool, but does anybody really need a 2008 Camaro that looks like a 1968 Camaro, since we don't have 1968 gas prices? Maybe if they put a diesel engine in the thing and you could run it on biodiesel?

10. Ford did a good job with the retro T-Bird
and a real good job with the retro Mustang. But they're still copies.

And that's the thing. Copies are designed to make you think of the original. They can't be the original.

12. I heard there's a new Shelby Mustang coming out next year
Can that possibly live up to the original?

5. Hi, Oeditpus Rex!
I watched about 10 minutes of that 'tribute' a few weeks ago. Tribute is not the word I'd use...pretty awful.

But, knowing you love baseball as much as I do, here is a real treat. This video is a hoot. Enjoy!

7. Oh, SHIT!
That's hiLARious!

Kinda weird, too — I just saw Leary a few nights ago in "The Sandlot," teaching his geeky stepson how to have a catch.

Whereya been, girl? How's the Five-Seven lookin'?

11. I knew you would like that one
I had never heard of them, but that video is priceless.

The 57 is just dandy. We have been driving it a lot more lately since we finally found the right carburetor. Third one was the charm! Now that we have tackled the noxious fumes issue, she is good to go.
The only negative, for the value at least, are the Barrett-Jackson auctions. Some of those tricked-out 57's are sold at such a low price, it may make our 'driver' worth less. Not that we would sell, but it doesn't help. Oh well.

I've got a pic of her on my journal. Taking her out tomorrow so better get some sleep. Talk to you soon.:hi:
