IMPORTANT! Radio Lady Program Info for Monday, August 28, 2006
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 07:00 PM by Radio_Lady
Hello to all you dear denizens of the Democratic Underground!

On Monday afternoon, August 28, 2006, you can hear my recorded interview with New York author and journalist Suzanne Braun Levine. The program will be streamed on the Internet from Oregon Public Broadcasting. Suzanne is the author of Inventing the Rest of Our Lives: Women in Second Adulthood, a 2006 book available in paperback. The interview is thirty-two minutes long. I must say this intelligent and interesting woman has a great deal to say to women of all ages about what matters -- what works -- and what's next!

This is a descriptive, passionate, and informative guide for women whose lives are changing in ways they never could have anticipated. As they move out of the roles of their first adulthood – daughter, wife, mother, employee, volunteer, grandmother, all-around self-sacrificing nurturer – they are building new identities, new relationships, and new roles in the culture. The 37 million women entering their fifties and sixties are creating a new social movement at the same time as they are discovering a new frontier within themselves.

Suzanne Braun Levine emphasizes how important it is to take time, enough time, making the transition – which she describes as a journey from “The Fuck You Fifties” through the “Fertile Void” to “Recalibrating Your Life.” She explains what scientists and sociologists and behaviorists are finding out about what is going on in mature women’s bodies, psyches, and spiritual selves. Despite the numbers of women on this journey, each woman often feels that she is traveling alone. If Dr. Spock defined this generation as they were growing up, Suzanne Levine is doing the same for women as they get a second chance at adulthood.

With her book and her website, Suzanne wants to create a community among the women who are defining a new stage of life as they live it.

You can hear my entire 50-minute program via your computer on Monday, August 28 at 1 PM Pacific Time/2 PM Mountain Time/3 PM Central Time/4 PM Eastern Time (KINDLY ADJUST FOR YOUR TIME ZONE.)

A few minutes prior to the start of the show, please follow the directions below:

Go here and choose one of the "Golden Hours" media players in the SECOND PARAGRAPH. You will be connected with the Oregon Public Broadcasting streaming audio.

Please be patient through news and station IDs. The program usually starts a few minutes after the top of the hour. (Also, you'll hear my comments on current films which streams after the interview with Suzanne.)

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to PM me. Suzanne's website is interactive and you can add comments there or explore her upcoming public appearances if you wish. Again, her website is:

Thanks for your interest and support!

4. You're welcome! Hope you get to hear this show.
My injured back is feeling much better. I'm walking, swimming, enjoying the summer, and just generally keeping a good thought in my head.

I had an appointment with a physical therapist earlier this week, and will continue seeing her in three weeks.

After that, we're heading to Ft. Myers, Florida and then Orlando, FL -- this is all despite hurricane threats. I just feel compelled to go to my 50th high school reunion. We will spend a week with my son, daughter-in-law, and two precious grandkids. We leave on Oct. 6 -- 22. Just have to keep hoping we won't have any hurricanes during that time frame. We've purchased trip insurance if things get to0 problematic.

I grew up in south Florida and lived there for 28 years. I can't take the heat, humidity, and now these yearly hurricane threats. We'll continue to visit Florida (Mexico and Hawaii, too), probably every couple of years, because the places are beautiful and this kind of planning gives us a winter break to look forward to.

Thanks for the wave!

2. I think I hit the "F U Fifties" back when I turned 28
Thanks for the heads-up! I'm looking forward to at least checking out her book, if I can't get to the interview. Will the show be archived?

6. Yep! You might start by reading at the link, where there are several
excellent excerpts -- about nine or ten pages, I believe.

Certainly you can start out by reading what she had deemed important enough to go to her site.

Othere places to check for reviews are: Amazon.com; your local bookstore. If it's on the shelf, you might be able to peruse it before you plunk down the price.

I'm using some diet drinks (some with small amounts of caffeine and some with other energizing substances) from the Sobe Lean energy drinks. Have you ever tried them?

8. Suzanne, as well as many others are writing about -- and now
actually living our "new rules" about life after age 50.

As a matter of fact, Suzanne told me she is working on a new book tentatively called "Fifty Is The New Fifty" -- great title!

Did you go to her link and read some excerpts from her book?

11. Great! Since it's just Suzanne and me, it will be almost like a coffee
clatch -- I really miss having a call-in audience, but then there isn't any fighting or angry people to deal with. Unless I get mad at myself...!

Have a good week!

In peace,

15. You'll get an earful about us "women of a certain age."
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 10:00 AM by Radio_Lady
The author and I are both over 65, and forging new territories that our mothers usually did not get to explore. I love it!

Suzanne's mother is very much alive, and in her 90's -- my mother passed away at age 71 in 1991. She once told me she was jealous of me (!) because of the many opportunities I have had in my lifetime. Mom wanted to be a journalist, but married my father at age 18 and I was born at age 19. Mom never did go back to college and worked as a secretary to my father for a very long time.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

17. If you actually listen through the Internet today, let me know.
I'm trying to judge whether or not this is a good way to promote my audio program.

Thanks for your help!

In peace,

Radio_Lady
