What kind of person could kill a chipmunk?
My husband just got back from our place up north. He told me that our new neighbor had come over for a visit and told my husband that last week he "went on a rampage" and killed eight chipmunks with his BB gun. He was bragging about it. My husband looked at him and said, "why would you do something like that?" The guy said that they get into everything. Get into what? We have had our place for 20 years, and we've never had a chipmunk "get into" anything. The first thing I do every morning when I am up there is throw corn and shelled peanuts on our deck. We sit and watch them come up on the deck and eat and play---they are so cute.

One of the reasons people buy a place in the woods is so they can enjoy watching the wild life. I just don't get it!

I'm feeling a combination of sadness and anger right now..... :banghead:

4. They were not shot
for food. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone shooting a chipmunk for food. This guy just doesn't like them on his land. How can anyone not like a little chipmunk?

23. I've known folks whose brothers would shoot squirrels for dinner
I'm a city woman so I don't know how far away chipmunks are to squirrels, but I imagine that some folks do hunt chipmunks for food as well. Not that that has anything to do with this guy, of course...

3. I think we walk amongst more sociopaths than we realize.

Killing chipmunks with a BB gun is disgusting. A few years ago we had posters up in our Brooklyn neighborhood warning cat owners (ours are indoor cats) that someone in the neighborhood was killing or seriously injuring the neighborhood cats with a BB gun. My heart sank with sadness that creeps like this get away with harming other creatures.

5. How about jackasses taking pot shots at coyotes?
It's always to help the farmers. Funny thing, most of the farmers around here are onion growers!

17. The saddest thing about that is that our tax dollars go to shooting
coyotes. Apparently either the Department of Agriculture (or one of those millions of departments in our government) flies over cattle ranches and shoots them. I saw something about that on 48 hours, 20/20 or one of those shows years ago about it. It's apparently fact too. I wish I could remember which show it was or had a link to the story. Did anyone else see that too?

24. It used to be called Animal Damage Control but I think they
gave it a "freindlier" name a couple of years ago. I don't think predator control should be done this way, but one thing that gets forgotten when the press tries to get folks riled about this agency is that they also are the agency used when there is a rabies outbreak.

9. If I had been there,
I would have said a lot more. But when you live in a remote area, you don't want to anger your neighbors. No telling what they might do in retaliation. So, it was probably better that I was not there. My husband handled it the right way. He let this guy know he did not approve without angering him.

10. I've been tempted...
After 20 or 30 tries with the camera and only getting pictures of blurs and chipmunk tails, it's tempting to shoot one just to get it to hold still...

(Yes, I'm kidding - and your neighbor's an ass.)

14. Oh My Gosh...
that's so sad. I saw one crossing the street when i was driving home, but i didn't know it was a chipmunk until I saw the pic on your post. That dude will get a taste of his own medicine. When I was little i killed a lizard and afterwards i was terrified that it will turn into a crocodile and eat me for revenge.

15. I just don't see how
we can see that doing something like that is so mean spirited and hateful, while others think it is perfectly alright. I guess humans are not all on the same "wave length".

16. I don't even pretend to understand how those people think.
I can almost guarantee you that if you asked him what they "get into" he would say uncovered food or something else that he should have known better than to leave exposed anyhow.

Too bad we can't train little critters to fight back in some way. I used to have a game in the late 90's where you could play the deer and shoot back. The camoflaged dudes would say silly hee haw style sayings when they were shot. It wasn't very realistic or vicious or anything, just lighthearted fun. I rather enjoyed that game. Too bad they didn't take it further and add more levels and characters to the game. It would have been interesting. I could see a multiplayer version of the game where hunters and the hunted could play games online. I would have really enjoyed that one.

19. Except for kitties, chippies are my fav animals!
Even Chip 'n Dale are my favorite Disney characters. I feed them... unlike the crazed, semi-evil squirrels, I wish I could pick up chippies and pet them.

What an evil twisted FUCKER.

Yep, another friendly message from the Squirrel Nut Brigade. And remember, even if you don't feed the squirrels, they'll find a way to eat it anyway. And you haven't outsmarted them yet. Muahahahhaha. :hi:

20. He's probably a repuke gun-nut.
There are a lot of them around here, too. It makes me sick that they will even shoot at birds. One of the worst things about living in the country is the shooting.... it will start with "small game" season and go on for months as they graduate to turkeys and deer. They are a bunch of sickos.

I love chipmunks, too.... they dig little tunnels outside, but they are not invasive. And they are really, really cute, even if they do eat all the blueberries and strawberries in my garden!

26. I'm not promoting this guy's way of getting rid of chipmunks
but they can be a problem if they get into your attic space and cause problems like mice do. There are other options out there though, other than a bb gun. That's actually kind of sick.

Even larger animals can get up there too. My mom had raccoons this spring get into the crawl space above her porch and have babies. Wicked cute, but their urine and feces, and food make a hell of a problem with a wood ceiling.

28. Chipmunks around here are too trusting of humans.
It's probably not good for them, especially when they run into someone like this trigger happy asswipe neighbor.

A few years ago, I was at school eating a candy bar that I just purchased from a vending machine. This chipmunk runs right up to me and literally stands on my foot, thinking I'm going to feed him. Which I probably would have, except I didn't think chocolate was a good idea for a little critter like that, and there wasn't any nuts in it. Told him I'd buy the bag of peanuts next time, but he apparently had moved on to another part of the campus.
