Can you sing?
I can't sing worth a shit. :yoiks: I really love music and sing when nobody else is listening, but it makes one of my dogs howl. My whole family is tone-deaf, which is why none of us are singers. I don't have any musical ability whatsoever, but I dearly love music.

I admire anyone who can sing and make it sound good. :) Oh, and I'm not talking about American Idol bullshit---just people who can sing naturally without sounding like a Mariah Carey wannabe.

13. I can carry a tune.
And read music. But I don't have a good voice ... and it's not trained. I took voice class in college one semester. After working on the same song for several weeks and not improving, the prof finally said, "Hmmm ... maybe it's the song ..." I didn't take another semester of it.

My mom sings like a bird and was going to be an opera singer before the babies started to come. None of us got any of her talent. I play piano, though, so maybe that counts for something.

26. Not at all.
However, that does not stop me from turning into a rock star when I'm in my Jeep. And I once won third prize in a karaoke contest. It was a work Christmas party and only two coworkers entered (usual because normally they were insane debaucherous events). So basically, I figured they had all seen me do incredibly stupid things before, so I entered and won 3rd prize by default. Hey it was worth the $50.

This guy here though, well he sounds exactly like Jim Morrison...acts like him too, in case the picture didn't give it away.

27. Yep--I really like to sing, too
Whether my family agrees is another matter!

I was told by someone I respect highly that I could "really" sing (I think, before he heard me, he figured I could simply carry a tune). However, I have a fairly narrow range and my voice is low for a female--kind of in the Bonnie Raitt/Melissa Etheridge range, so I can't sing just anything. But what I can do, I do well (so I've been told).

I've performed onstage before--been in musicals and revues, and done some open mike nights (I also play guitar) but I don't write music.

Funny thing is, I've never done karaoke! It's a goal of mine--something to conquer before I die--win over a bar full of drunk bastards.

44. Sure can!
I've sung with groups and choirs for years.

My latest group has even cut two CDs.

Going to the studio to record the CDs was great fun! I learned quite a bit about how songs are "manufactured". For instance, on our CD, each part (SATB) was recorded separately. I'm an alto, and on that day there were only 4 altos present. So we sang our parts twice and they combined the two recordings to make it sound like there were 8 of us!

By the time they got through mixing, we sounded like we were dozens -- and accompanied by a full orchestra.

75. We are working on recording some songs.
So far, she has recorded 'Fields of Gold' (Eva Cassidy's version) and 'Mining for Gold' (cowboy junkies - a capella).

I will see about posting them.

76. Can I sing, YES!
Can I sing and not offend everybody in the immediate area, and send dogs scurrying off? Absolutely not!

79. No.
I mean, I can more or less hit a note, I'm not tone deaf or anything. But that isn't what I would call being able to sing.

80. I was a chorister, way back when
At the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. We recorded a bunch of CDs and performed all over the place. That was a long, long time ago, though. I miss it a bit, actually. I'm probably the only Jewish chorister in history.

My voice is good, but Lelapin has the voice I *wish* I had. In Jr. High, she imitated Charlotte Church for fun. :eyes:

88. Yep
But I didn't really know it 'til last year.

Well, okay, I sorta figured it before, but I didn't do anything about it. I recorded myself singing and playing guitars 22 years ago, during A Year Of My Discontent, and when I played it for my brother and his best friend (who were and are musicians) they got all excited. But they were the only ones I ever let hear me and from then on I just sang most often when I was out walking the streets, the coast, or the bush by myself. Even my wife, through all the years of our marriage, never once heard me sing in earnest.

I wish I'd done something about it during those two decades. I did sing a Beatles song when I was dragged, kicking and screaming on to the stage -- by a group of surprisingly strong women -- on one of the tropical islands where I was doing research work, but that was the extent of my public performance until last year. Still, I'm having fun now and I think I'm already noticing an increase in my vocal range and ability to do kinds of voices that eluded me before.

I was always a good mimic. Not like some professional impressionist -- more hit and miss than that -- but I could at least suggest the singing or talking voices of quite a few people and cartoon characters.

I'm ok and I've sung in local shows...but it all depends on the song. Of course, in the shower, I'm brilliant! :silly:

I can't translate those sounds into reasonable vocalizations. :D Doesn't stop me from screaming along whenever I'm alone, though. :)

Doesn't mean I don't love it, though. When there's no one else at home and I hear a song that I like or that touches me in some way, I'll turn up the radio sometimes and sing like there's no tomorrow.

Poor kitties.
