WGN at 7:00 central. The one with George C. Scott as Scrooge, this one emphasis's the social inequiety better than the others I believe.

1. They've been showing clips from this one in church
for the last few weeks, with the sermons based around it (I'm still freaking AMAZED that I've found a liberal church!)

6. That was actually the 50's
It was either 1950 or 1951, and the actual title was "Scrooge." Although it's listed as "A Christmas Carol" in the TV guide a lot. American Movie Classics shows it every year, I think. It's the best!

8. The Alastair Sim version is from 1951
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 11:51 AM by ZombyWoof
It was originally called "Scrooge" upon release in the UK, "A Christmas Carol" in the US, same year of release.

The "Christmas Carol" from 1938 on Turner Classic Movies featured Reginald Owen as Scrooge.

4. I have to say I think the one with Patrick Stewart is awesome!
I caught a bit the other night. I've seen it before and if it's repeated, I will watch the whole thing again.

Joel Grey is in it, too.

I simply think Stewart is the best! He also did readings of CC on the stage for several years in NYC....

11. I liked it too!
Although my devilish side couldn't resist me adding "Make it so!" during opportune moments.

But Stewart is great - as for contemporary interpretations, I prefer his to the George C. Scott version.

12. I still like the Alistair Sim Scrooge best
He plays the range of the character best from the cruel money grubber to the charitable man at the conclusion. The extra scenes from the visit with the ghost of Christmas past flowed well.

The Scott 1984 version has British actor David Warner playing Bob Cratchet. Warner is a very underrated actor.

13. The George C. Scott version is the best of all time, because...
1) Scott plays Scrooge as a smart but heartless businessman, not as a scenery chewing old nitwit.

2) Edward "The Equalizer" Woodward is great as the Dionysian Ghost of Christmas Present. He makes you wish you could be a Ghost of Christmas Present when you die.

3) The Ghost of Christmas Future is freaking scary.

4) David Warner's Cratchit struck just the right balance between being hopelessly oppressed by his employer and trying to make the best of things for his family. I really felt for him.

I think, of all the cinematic versions, this is the one that really makes you think about the consequences of our "business-oriented" society.
