8. HELL no.
Maybe a nicely wrapped teething ring when the kid hits the air, but showers are meant to be given by FRIENDS and FAMILY, not a captive crowd like subordinates at work.

It's not your job.

12. I am bad about this stuff
I mean I'm a bitch. I can't help it. I don't like spending any money on people I work with unless we happen to be friends outside of work. Not only would I not throw the shower, I probably wouldn't get her a present. (Probably why I've had so many jobs and am for the most part unemployed).

24. no...i'm am so done with feeling....
of feeling obligated to people. Many times having to say no to myself, my kids because we don't have the money, why would I obligate myself to others? I'm done with it. I'm over pitching in for gifts for people etc. I'm also done with pitching in for gifts for the big boss who has loads of money and could care less about some token gift the office chips in for. Don't even ask me for $5.00. I have seen bosses take off the tag/wrap of a gift they have rec'd around x-mas, have me re-wrap/tag it so they can give it to someone else. They can call me cheap, a bitch, I don't care. Now, if there should be someone special , who deserves a gift and you are able to do it, then that's another thing.

27. No, even when she pressures you to do so...
Tell her it's impossible because you know she has so many friends and a baby shower is such an intimate thing and the last thing she'll want is a third or fourth or fifth one to attend. (Act flattered and say this with glassy-eyed sincerity.)

Does that answer the real question?

I wouldn't give her a baby shower, maybe buy something for the kid, but as in, throwing/hosting a party? Nah, let one of your bosses good friends do it, and buy the kid a dollar pacifier or something...:)

34. I wouldn't give my boss a baby shower if she didn't
Unless she was also a close personal friend.

This whole bit of giving baby showers and parties for people one works with is absurd IMO. That's supposed to be the function of close family and friends. As far as I'm concerned, I'm at work to work, not win popularity contests. While I have a select group who I do consider friends, I refuse to be dragged into the faux "social obligations" that people insist upon inflicting upon the people they work with.

36. Totally agree.
It has gotten way out of hand. Baby shower for this one, bridal shower for that one, gift exchanges at Christmas...often for people you wouldn't deal with if you didn't have to at work. I hate it.

38. Maybe...
It depends on whether or not I felt it would touch her. It might make her think a little more about how she treats her employees. On the other hand, she might view it as an effort to kiss up.

40. Seems the consensus is no
I tend to agree... but don't know your particulars... don't know the environment... etc...

only you can answer and there is really no "right" or "wrong" decision except that you should just do what you want. If others in your office want to give her a baby shower - so be it. Just because you are invited, doesn't mean you *HAVE* to attend. I've thrown baby showers for sisters, sisters-in-law and cousins - always invited personal friends and family and EVERYONE that was invited doesn't come. I threw these baby showers because I WANTED to... not because I felt I HAD to -

At my previous place of work, if my boss had been pregnant - I would have WANTED to throw her a shower... We (most office employees) were pretty close at that place of employment and I would have been very, very excited for her. Even in my current job - if my supervisor's soon to be wife gets prego - I might throw her one just b/c they don't have many close friends in the area and I want to make her feel more welcome and show my happiness for her... plus I love shopping for baby stuff... I like making cute little centerpieces for the tables, etc...
