Need musical help for a friend
I have a friend with a 14-year-old who's getting into punk. He likes Anti-Flag, but she's worried because of it's political controversial nature.

You know me, I WANT the kid to go to this band and learn to question authority....but she is a friend and she came to me to ask me what punk bands would help him strengthen his love for the genre without getting too controversial.

Sigh. Oh, well.

I wanted to say NOFX, but the latest CD would subvert her wishes.

So whaddya think, DUers? Dropkick Murphys? Rancid?

A little help.

1. J Mascis, the Melvins
and southern VA-based Double Helix.

This advice comes from my own 14-yr old son.

2. Propaghandi, Bad Religion,Pennywise, etc.....
All of these are pretty political.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes for the fun stuff.

Please, no Blink-182. No MTV-Punk. Don't punish your young friend like that.

And maybe for a daring treat, expose the kid to great old school punk, like the Jam, The Saints, Wire, Costello, The Minutemen, Husker Du, etc....

4. Cool
Sounds good....

I love Me First. Spike (lead singer) is a friend of mine, but I'm just not into his other band much (Swingin' Utters).

Don't worry about Blink. I said PUNK....so this automatically disqualifies them.

3. Dropkick Murphys, Minor Threat, Fugazi
Early Misfits(Danzig era)
Black Flag
Fear
The Exploited
G.B.H.

With all due respect, punk should be controversial, otherwise you've got pop fluff like Green Day and the odious Avril, Queen of Corporate alt-rock.
