My pick for greatest rock tune...
A Day In The Life, by the Beatles.

Agree? Disagree?

1. There was some talk about 'She's Leaving Home' as being one of
the best songs ever written. That was back in the day when the song was popular. And it is a fantastic song.

3. Disagre...
... I'll never understand the fascination with that tune. It's good, but the Beatles have done 100 songs better than that. :)

But music appreciation is subjective. If you like it, you like it. My son was recently telling me about "someone's" top 200 singles of the sixties list.

"God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys was #1. Now, I love the BBs and they are certainly worthy but.. BEST SINGLE OF THE 60s? No freaking way!

(BTW - A Day in a Life was the first Beatles song on the list, at number 5, so you are not alone :))

8. Kashmir was soo cool in concert
I told my friends that Jimmy Page had arrows coming out of his guitar when he did his solo, they thought I was trippin', but THAT WAS SO COOL IN 1977!!!!!!

18. Seconded
I love Kashmir. I think, though, my favorite live version of Kashmir was the version done by Page & Plant during their concert tour back in the mid-90s. They tossed the strings and moroccan feel to the song just took it to a level that amazed me

6. I agree with you..
... I was just about to post it.

From the buzzing guitars, to the frustration, and the "he can't be a man cuz he doesn't smoke... the same cigarettes as me" - this is a true classic with few equals if any.

9. Honestly, I wouldn't call that song "rock."
It is beyond that as Beatles in their own cutting edge style.

Now, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" is a GREAT rock song. Heh heh. ;)

10. Yes, Voodoo Chile, and....
...I have ten or so songs that I call my favorite depending on my mood. Sultans of Swing, In My Time of Dying, Hey Jude, My Sweet Lord, a dozen interchangeable Bob Dylan songs, El Paso, Baba O'Reilly, Back in Black, I Believe in a Better Way, etc...

11. I have also heard it appled to "In My Life" by the Beatles, though
even though it's a good song, it wouldn't be my pick.

14. Rock is open to a lot of genres. Could you narrow it down a bit?
Pop?
Bubblegum?
Rock-n-roll?
Rock?
Soft rock?
Hard Rock?

Or about a dozen others....

15. There is no greatest rock tune
Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 12:23 PM by taterguy
Rock is about living in the moment. It's not supposed to be lasting art, just something to enjoy. The greatest rock tune should be constantly changing: One moment it's Chuck Berry's "Carol", another it's the Drive-By Truckers "Steve McQueen", another it's Yo La Tengo's "The Evil That Men Do" etc, etc

Besides, rock tunes do not use piano as their primary instrument, unless it's being played by Jerry Lee Lewis

20. Sympathy for the Devil
Rock is by it's nature rebellious and a little scary. This song has it all, plus Bill Wyman's bassline is one of the greatest of all time.
