So what's your heritage?
As in ancestry... countries your family came from. Mine's Scottish, Greek, and Dutch, primarily :hi: Throw in any interesting ancestors as well if you've got 'em.

14. Not exactly sure.
My granny was born in Canada then moved here (to N.Ireland) when she was young. Then mostly everyone else in my family was born and raised here to my knowledge, as far as I know anyway. I figure if someone else had come from somewhere far away I'd have found out about it by now :)

Not very exciting or varied compared to some other peoples family backgrounds !.

15. 75% Irish & 25% Swiss
The only interesting stuff I have is a couple family members who did jail time (one guy for kidnapping, a favorite family story). Oddly enough, none of the ones who did jail time were the Mafia members (Italian mobsters who married in on my dad's side). There's nothing interesting on my mom's side. They're all fucked up but in a dysfunctional hating sort of way. On my dad's side, it's dysfunctional but everyone loves each other.

They both died when I was a little kid. Of course, I didn't know about their jobs then. They were just really nice rich uncles. As for my cousin that did time for kidnapping, we just refer to it as the guy owed Jimmy money, so Jimmy stole the guy.

40. Somewhere they probably do.
If my family lived in Bumfuck, USA then I'm sure we wouldn't have such a colorful past. Everyone on my father's side basically lived directly across the Hudson from NYC (as did I as a kid). Moving to the suburbs was major culture shock for me. I thought I was in the wilderness. I had always seriously thought that going to visit my uncle in Fort Lee was going to the country. In actuality, Fort Lee is a very built up area, but he had a yard with grass, therefore he lived in the country. At least compared to the 2 family brownstone (with attached embrodiery factory) with an alleyway on each side and a concrete "backyard" that was really just a loading area for the embroidery factories (my grandparents and the other factory directly behind us).

Irish, Luxembourgisch, German, French-Canadian, Swiss and Iroquois. What is interesting is that my Irish relatives were Norman-Irish, and the French relatives were originally from Ireland, but fled to France with the rest of the Wild Geese in the 1690s and then to Quebec where someone married the Iroquois. In other words, my French and Irish ancestry are all mixed up.

Edited on Tue Aug-22-06 09:05 PM by Maestro
we've traced back to 16th century Germany.

Here is a picture of my grandfather's parents on my mother's side. My great grandfather's family is from Cork, Ireland. My great grandmother was born in Pennsylvania but her dad is from England. The second picture is her dad as a boy in England. Just to liven things up a bit, after getting married my great grandparents moved to Mexico to find work. My great great Uncle, his brother, started a saloon there. The third pic is the picture inside of the saloon. My great, great Uncle is the one standing.

Also on my mother's mother's side of the family, this is picture of the my great, great, great grandfather. He was born in 1815 in Kentucky and his family is originally from England as well. He founded Jacksonville, Texas.

I have a large collection.

Here are my great Aunts taken while still living in Mexico before the revolution.

This is the whole family. My grandfather is the baby. The house where this photo was taken was still around in the 1980s. I haven't been back since then though.

My country place is up in Texoma, about 10 miles from OK. The people up there are so completely different than Dallasites, it's amazing. Of course, they probably are also very different in Ellis county :)

I know here on DU folks think Texans are all a bunch of dumbass hicks, but that's really not the case :) Of the folks I've gotten to know up there, plenty are strong Democrats. Damn near all of them are just nice people.

Scottish on one Grandmother's side, the other is Scots-Irish. One grandfather German (Pomeranian--the distinction was important to him), the other Irish. Two of my great-greatgrandmothers were Native American--Menominee, to be exact. And one of my ancestors on the Scots-Irish side, which dates to colonial times, was a member of the Green Mountain Boys.

I could join the DAR if I wanted. But I don't.

Here's an odd story: My Mother told me, growing up, that her side of the family was French. It turns out, and I only learned this at my Grandfather's funeral, at 36 years of age, (which was 13 years after my mother died) that there is no French what-so-ever...only Irish and Cherokee. To this day, I have no idea why she thought her descendants were French.
There was a great Aunt, who attended my Grandfather's funeral, who gave me a huge genealogy report (2 inches thick) showing my Mother's Irish side of the family. The report shows our genealogy all the way back to Eric the Red.

I always knew I was Irish, somehow, and always had a fondness for Irish Whiskey...so I was relieved, in a way-- though still puzzled.

He went to church for their wedding and the baptism of their son...

I read ONE POST, which has since DISAPPEARED, that included Africa. I did take particular notice as it was the only post I have EVER SEEN in this type of thread where someone has CLAIMED African heritage and decided to wait til after work for the thread to develop. I'm always fascinated by Amis who claim their "mutthood" while at the same time being so hostile to languages other than English and it was the FIRST TIME on DU that I'd EVER SEEN someone, who by the rest of the mix could possibly be id'ed as white, CLAIM AFRICAN HERITAGE. THAT POST HAS VANISHED!!!

On edit: WHEW!!! Found it... The copycat thing moves too swiftly for old ladies like me. :freak:

148. Japanese and Jewish...
Mom was Nisei, Dad was (Russian) Jewish, both children of immigrants. They met in Berkeley in 1934 but couldn't marry in California at that time (anti-miscegenation laws).

Biracial types aren't unusual these days, but back when I was born (1949) it was definitely out of the ordinary...

That's roughly in order from most to least, leaving out what's negligible and of course, unknown. :-)

My mother's side is from Bari, on the Adriatic Coast. My father is from Filicudi, an Island north of Sicily.

In other words I'm half Sicilian, and I know people. So to paraphrase the lame duck Senator from Connecticut, fuck with me at your peril.:grr:

156. English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, German, Huguenot French, and Dutch...
Somewhat interesting ancestors: a 5th great-grandfather was a Pennsylvania Quaker who was thrown out of meeting for attending a marriage in a non-Quaker church (the Quakers were a lot less tolerant back then); a 7th great-grandfather was an Ulster Scots minister who was the second pastor of the oldest Presbyterian church in America (Rehoboth Church in Maryland, founded in 1683--he married a fairly well-off widow, and one of his grandsons was a governor of Maryland); a 4th great-grandfather was an attorney from Maryland--he was given a patronage job at the US Treasury by Andrew Jackson and moved to Washington, DC, in the 1820's--his daughter, my ggg-grandfather's sister, married Mathew Brady (famous Civil War photographer); several of my ancestors were English Catholics who settled in Maryland in the 1630's (a few had the imposing title of 'Lord of the Manor', with all the privileges of an English baronial court), and one of my Maryland Catholic ancestors (a 10th great-grandfather) kidnapped his sister-in-law, the stepdaughter of the colonial secretary, to bring her up as a Catholic against the wishes of her mother and stepfather; an 11th great-grandfather was a Puritan commissioner sent by Cromwell to govern Maryland under the Commonwealth (which was a rather bloody era in colonial history; the proprietary government refused to yield to Cromwell's men, and it led to violence and not a few deaths); a 7th great-grandfather was a participant in Nathaniel Bacon's rebellion against Governor Berkeley of Virginia in 1676--he was an officer in Bacon's army, and narrowly escaped the noose (he was eventually pardoned, but forbidden to hold public office--he was later elected to the House of Burgesses, but denied his seat).

More specifically my mother's family is from the East Riding of Yorkshire (God's own county), which means it's very possible that there's a smidgen of something Scandinavian due to trading links. My father's family from what is now called South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

163. Ukrainian French Scot English German Prussian
Two generations away from the Ukraine on dad's side, Gramps came through Ellis Island in 1905.

Mom's side: French, Scot (Robertson clan - Ancrum Scotland) & English, a little German & Prussian. Know quite a bit about mom's side from a cousin that's really into genealogy. Mom has French surname and is from an illustrious French family, Have 4 Revolutionary War vets in ancestry; two French Navy veterans of the American Revolution that were in the naval battle off Yorktown, two American Continental Army ancestors from MA. (also not in SAR, not my style) Gr-gr-grandfather and his 4 brothers in the Union army during the Civil war, one was killed a few months before the end of the war in VA.

One English ancestor had to hot-foot it out of England one step ahead of the sheriff – accused of poaching!
