Dylan sounds like a cranky old man...
you know..."you call that music?" kind of crap. I know he was refering to the sound quality but...

{snip}
LOS ANGELES - Bob Dylan says modern recordings sound “atrocious,” and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.

“I don’t know anybody who’s made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really,” the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

“You listen to these modern records, they’re atrocious, they have sound all over them,” he added. “There’s no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static.”{/snip}

4. he's got a point
as a producer & engineer I hear it. Everything today is super compressed, limited, punched up to be as loud as possible. As a result there's no dynamics. The music doesn't breathe. It sound brittle & harsh. Digital distortion is very unpleasant to the ears too, not like the old days of analog tape saturation. Even worse a lot of old recordings are being remastered this way, so you have to hunt down the original out of print masters on CD & Vinyl.

5. OId? What does age have to do your critique?
He's been around a long time - yes. Which gives him the experience to know what he's talking about. Perhaps the 'youth' should learn how to be real musicians instead of catering to marketing based 'music' which ultimately has very little substance.

7. I think
you misunderstood my post. I was making fun of people like my parents who said "you call that music" back in the day when they heard my Dylan records. It wasn't a slam at Dylan at all, just kind of ironic since if you didn't pay attention to what he was really saying, you would think he was bashing the music, which he wasn't. He was bashing the digital technology used to record modern music.

12. yes.. I saw the technology angle and agree with him completely
but you still brought age into it :P

Here's a bit of his opinion on some modern bands/music - which I was aware of and influenced my remarks. though you are right - it was the technology he was attacking here.

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/bob_dylan_attack_modern_bands.html?200502181018

Bob Dylan has launched a withering attack on contemporary rock bands in the programme notes for his latest American tour, reports NME. "I know there are groups at the top of the charts that are hailed as the saviours of rock'n'roll and all that, but they are amateurs.

"They don't know where the music comes from," he wrote, adding, “I wouldn't even think about playing music if I was born in these times... I'd probably turn to something like mathematics. That would interest me. Architecture would interest me. Something like that."

are not fit to shine Dylans BOOTS . He is an icon , an artist that comes around once in a lifetime , if you are lucky

BTW Dylan and I are the same age (about) so I guess my opinion does not count in your estimation

8. chill..
you misunderstood what I was saying... and for the record, I'm not that far behind Dylan in age. I guess I should have used the sarcasm smilie. I thought I was being obvious. Guess not.

9. Aside from the fact he's dead on in regards to "modern" recording methods,
anyone that thinks he's a cranky old man hasn't listened to Theme Time Radio Hour. I find myself laughing out loud many times during his show.

10. He's wrong IMO - too much generalization
Even his own son is making good music. But I'll certainly check out his new one. I'm a Dylan fan.

11. but he's not really talking about the music..
he's talking about the digital technology for recording music today. Unfortunately, the article is written in such a way that it makes him sound like a cranky old man..."back in my day, we had real music" kind of stuff.

13. It's just when he says it sounds bad
I don't see how he can find it enjoyable. I think methods used today will keep some stuff from sounding dated later.

14. BTW, he has some good points
There are definitely some over-produced CDs. There are definitely vocals that are over-layered. But I've found plenty of albums to be just right.

16. Heh, Dylan had 'Cranky Old Man' down before he was 30.
He's right too. The worst sins of 70's and 80's audio engineering fads are nothing compared to the abuse of compressors and limiters over the last decade.

17. Well, I'll just have to differ
Some of the 80s synths were much worse than today. It's all in the ear of the beholder, and I'll leave it at that.
