5. Couldn't agree with you more...
about both the genius of "Guffman" and the disappointment of "Wind"

6. ok... sad admission
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 12:57 AM by thebigidea
at the Harry Smith Project in LA at UCLA, before A MIGHTY WIND came out, I was up in the balcony when they came out to do a few songs, apparently to test it out or something.

"Why is everyone laughing!?!" I demand from some strange woman - who turns over, stares at me like I was complete idiot - of course, I couldn't admit that I was - and stutters: "Uhhh - its uh... Spinal Tap."

Ohhhhhhhh.

Fooled by Crepe HAIR!

I then proceeded to enjoy the "Eat at Joe's" song.

Wonderful night. Beck did strange folk mutations, Elvis Costello crooned, a galaxy of odd music in honor of poor (dead) Harry Smith. Dave Thomas from PERE UBU did a KILLER version of Fishin' Blues, swigging from a flask. NOBODY CLAPPED OR RECOGNIZED HIM WHEN HE CAME OUT! I stood up and hollered: "Where's your motherfucking school spirit?!!? START CLAPPING!"

The audience obliged...

years later, I watch A MIGHTY WIND on DVD and go: "Oh! The crepe hair Spinal Tap guys I didn't recognize. D'oh!" - I didn't laugh so much, but I adore Catherine O'Hara (still looks faaaantastic) and worship Eugene Levy, so it was beautiful to watch that incredible comedy chemistry again.

I DEMAND DVDs of SCTV!

7. Dagnabbit! I Missed the Harry Smith Project!
Grrrrrrrrrrr! That sounds like it was incredible! Thanks for lettin' us in on the show.

The guy in charge of the programming for Royce Hall has put together some pretty cool shows. Sonic Youth curated one. Very avante garde sensibility unfortunately isn't appreciated here in LA --as evidenced by the lack of amazement from the UCLA audience for David Thomas.

David Thomas is to music what Brian Wilson or Wagner are to music--seminal.

I guess Avante Garde has that "french" sound to it-- kinda commie er somethin' prolly, y' know?

Anyway, Harry Shearer rules!

9. Just bought it
in fact, I bought the entire Christopher Guest mockumentary oeuvre the other day, and we went through all of 'em over two days. TOO frigging funny.

"There's a mighty wind a-blowin', it's blowin' you and me!" I about spit out my dentures when they sprang that line on me! Guest is a f***ing genius!
