Your NUMBER ONE album of all time
Okay, kiddies. This is it. This is the big one.

What is your NUMBER ONE album of all time?

Not 2. Not 3. One.

What is the one record in your collection that makes everything else pale in comparison?

I don't want lists. I don't want equivocation. I want title and artist. And why you think it's the greatest record ever.

Mine: "London Calling" by the Clash. To me, this is the best record ever made by anyone. Absolutely astonishing. There are so many genres represented on the album that it's hard to classify it. It transcends punk.

It is the divine record.

So 'fess up. What's your #1 album of all time? AND NO EQUIVOCATING, DAMMIT!

1. Led Zeppelin IV
Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest bands ever, and when I listen to that album, I am just in a whole different head space.

62. And I would say the first Zeppelin album
Although the second and fourth albums had their moments, the first album marked a turning point in music (as far as I'm concerned). What compares to Dazed And Confused or How Many More Times?

Now I have to rearrange the cds in my changer, since you got me thinking of it!

111. LZI probably ranks high up there
but it doesn't have "What is and What Should Never Be", "Thank You" and my personal favorite of all time: "Ramble On"

Plus the rest of the album including Whole Lotta Love, Heart Breaker, Living Loving Maid, The Lemon Song, Moby Dick and another favorite of mine Bring it on Home all rule too.

Yep, LZII is the Album that ruleS

112. Yep, if you weren't there in 1967, you have no idea
what a sensation Sgt Peppers was. Back then, we had to wait for 2-3 weeks for the LPs to arrive in smaller cities. We could hear the album in its entirety on the big AM stations at night, but we had to wait, to get our own copy.

Everyone I KNEW bought a copy the first day or two. Cost $4.33, I remember, a small fortune in 1967 dollars.

I have worn out three copies. No CDs of that one!!!

It was a big tossup between this album, "Revolver", and "Rubber Soul". But I went with WTB for its sheer and total vitality. It knocks my socks off like no other Beatles album does, or any other album for that matter. "Money" is one of the great album-closing songs of all time.

52. I agree on Hendrix - he was a real revolutionary
and I think he impacted the music world as much as the Beatles, although received less credit. More than any musician of the late 60's, his art reflected his times. He redefined the electric guitar and, among his other guitar contributions, is the first true heavy metal guitarist. A host of guitarists, including Beck and Clapton, had a clear demarcation in their playing styles, after being exposed to Hendrix. But I disagree with the album. "Axis" was a masterpiece, but I think "Are You Experienced" is the one that broke new ground. The tune "Could This Be Love" is amazing; Hendrix conveys the feeling of falling water through his guitar. "Manic Depression" is one of the most innovative rock tunes ever written. The backward guitar solo in "Are You Experienced" sounded light years ahead of its time when the album came out.

50. Joy Division, "Closer"
The album is devastating. It's almost unbearable to listen to due to the raw emotion. If someone were to ask me what having a psychotic episode is like (I have those, sometimes) I'd say "Play 'Closer.'"

Ian Curtis wasn't fucking around. Yes, The Cure and The Smiths released some depressing albums, but I think they were depressing more for the sake of being depressing. Ian Curtis was genuinely mentally ill, and anyone who has to deal with a mental illness will instantly recognize this. The last two songs are heartbreakingly beautiful.

60. Hounds Of Love
This was really hard, there are lots of records that have huge emotional resonance for me because they are touchstones for certain times in my life (good and bad times). But "Hounds Of Love" has been in heavy rotation, first on my turntable, then cassette deck, and now CD player, for 18 years, and it sounds every bit as good as the first time I heard it. I've listened to it literally hundreds of times, and I still can't sing along with "The Big Sky" without getting goosebumps and a big lump in my throat. An amazing piece of work, every track utterly stunning.

I will always be in love with Kate Bush... she's my dream woman (don't tell my wife).

89. It's been my fav for years
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 10:58 AM by WoodrowFan
I'm a sucker for live albums and Aerosmith is one of my favorite groups. When I FINALLY got a CD player, it was the first CD I bought. I have it on now, can't ever listen to "Chip Away at the Stone" too many times!

Dark Side of the Moon was the second CD I bought and Cheap Trick "Like at Budokan" would be my number 3. Also considered Pink Floyd's "Animals"

I liked it. I lost it.

Picked up a copy over Thanksgiving on shiny new 180-gram vinyl. It's still good.

Not the best ever, but good.

97. It's all good, except for....
"Project: Mersh" and "Three-Way Tie for Last," which were decidedly mediocre compared to their earlier stuff, and feature hilariously dated mid-80's production (the drums sound like shitty Springsteen drums). Unfortuneatly those two were the last before D. Boon died...supposedly they were gonna come back hard, but they never got the chance.

As Robert Christgau said at the time, "Shit...As if we needed ANOTHER reason to miss D. Boon. Shit."

After Double NIckels, get "What MAkes a MAn Start Fires." Or get "Post-Mersh, Vol. 1," since SST hasn't reissued their records in full.

103. Marvin Gaye, "What's Going On"

I would've picked Elvis Presley's "The Sun Sessions," but that was a compilation released 20+ years after Elvis made those recordings. As such, I figured it wasn't really an album in the truest sense of the word.

So I picked "What's Going On," which expanded the boundaries of what a soul album could include (and not only because "Right On" sported a flute solo). The lyrics are heartfelt and humanistic, the production is flawless, Marvin's singing was as high-quality as ever, and the overall sound was floating-on-air ethereal. What's not to love?
