Re: William Shatner roast -- I was kind of disappointed.
Edited on Mon Aug-21-06 06:13 PM by Radio_Lady
We watched it in a Seattle hotel room. (We love "Boston Legal" and have a long history with William Shatner.)

IMHO, there were too many homosexual jokes. Too many anti-female jokes. Too many old lady jokes. Also, I watch a LOT of media and we didn't know four of the comics at all. I liked Sandra Bullocks clip and the older clips from William Shatner's career, especially seeing him so young and attractive on the Mike Douglas show. (RIP, Mike -- you died on your own birthday, you old son of a gun!)

Also, there was much too much forced laughter at the expense of Farrah Fawcett... not even sure why they invited her.

I don't know... I expected more and better, too. After the show, I went for a swim on the 28th floor of the Renaissance Madison Hotel. That was very nice.

Feeling much better this week! HOORAY!

In peace,

Radio_Lady

1. I thought the roast was decent...
:) Farrah was horrible, and I don't know why she was there, Nimoy, Betty White, Takei, and Nichols, and even andy dick, I thought were hiliarous!...the rest...bleh, only reason why I know the comics, is becasue I saw them on the jimmy kimmel show, but if you were to ask me there names, I wouldn't know them, I just recongnized them...

2. I thought it was perfect..
.... and you may or may not be aware of the "slash" fiction based on Star Trek - and the fact that Sulu is gay. The jokes were based on that.

5. true
it was a lot better than Hugh Hefners, or Pam Anderson(why, why why) roast's...:) I haven't seen Drew Carrey's yet, but it looked promising...:)

7. This is the first roast I've seen on Comedy Central.
Missed the others you've mentioned.

6. Yes, I was aware that Mr. Takei was gay. I got most of the jokes.
However, there was so much that was BLEEPED (I wonder why) that it seemed pretty odd. Also, the face licking was overdone.

See other post for suggestions for this weekend. Thanks for adding your comments.

9. Well..
... Andy Dick is always a Dick so you can expect that. OTOH, his bit was the funniest - really out there.

Yes, the humor in these roasts is mean and nasty and it's not for everybody, but I like it. The only person I felt sorry for was Farrah, they were pretty rough on the poor dear :)

8. Hearing Betty White talk about Shatner's nuts and saying the phrase...
..."cock ring" (although it was bleeped) was worth it.

12. That Betty White..
.... she has a part on Boston Legal with Shatner.

Her bit was very funny, I wonder if she wrote it. In any event, she's one funny lady :)

14. "Golden Girls" is still in re-run and still funny as hell.
Edited on Mon Aug-21-06 06:32 PM by Radio_Lady
Estelle Getty -- who played Bea Arthur's mother -- has senile dementia and doesn't recognize Betty anymore (quoted last month in some magazine). That's very sad.

Betty White -- in her 80s and going strong! What a role model!

I remember when she married Allen Ludden (not sure I've spelled her name right), but not sure if she has any children.

13. {{blushes}} I had to explain what a cockring was to my 72 year old hubby.
I really don't think he knows much about that stuff, seeing as I'm the one with the "checkered past" in our family.

15. Speaking of bleeped..
... they bleeped "pussy" some times and not others. What's up with that?

16. Maybe depends on context?
Although when George Takei said "It smells like pussy in here ........I think?" that context was obvious. Maybe they let that one go because they think it's not sexual if a gay man says it? Who the Hell can figure out TV censorship?

I'm sure the show will turn up on their Saturday "late night stash" within the next week or two, which means they'll air it uncensored, but not until 1:00 AM. So if you really need to hear all the bleeped out words, there will be an opportunity. They get away with running the South Park movie in that time slot all the time, and the language in that movie is so NC-17 that they could NEVER air it during prime time FCC censored hours.

20. Bleeping conundrum: Why do they allow "ASS" but bleep "HOLE"?
I find that pretty weird. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

17. Any rug jokes?
I actually fell asleep in the middle of it -- and it started at 7 out here!

"Is that a Tribble on your head or are you just glad to see me?" That sort of thing.

19. Yes, there was. George Takei said his name was pronounced...
"tack-KAY" -- as in toupee "too-PAY"!

One other guest asked Shatner what he was wearing on his head TODAY, but Shatner didn't answer.

22. I couldn't bring myself to waste time watching most of it
Raunchy jokes with fill in the blanks for the subject just don't amuse me; they're too boring. Take half the jokes told and they could have been aimed at just about anyone. It reminds me of the one size fits all Polish/West Virginian/Red Neck/ Black/ whatever jokes. The bit with Shatner and Nimoy at the start was good.

23. It was so way over-the-top . . .
. . . that it had very little, or no, basis in reality. Therefore, it was not funny; just shocking. All of the focus was taken off of Shatner. That's too bad.

24. Yeah I was dissapointed too...too much crudeness in place of...
Actual humor...anytime someone needed a laugh they would just make reference to genitalia or sex act for a laugh...

Shatner was actually pretty funny...as was Sandra Bullock...
