Doctors would "dope" an ether mask with ether, rendering the patient, hopefully, unconscious. "Dope" was an expression for somebody under the influence of ether, and grew to include the altered conscious under any drug, or in some cases the drug itself.

90% of my friends are potheads, or were potheads in the past...I have only one issue with pot, concerning a few of my friends...that pot is usually atop their priority list, over other pressing monetary issues, which include...kids need new clothes, they will get pot first, wife needs new work pants, pot comes first...catch my drift? Not all of my pot head friends are this way, but a good handful are...but same cycle can be seen with all other substances as well, aka alcohol, cigs....
