5. Context-dependent.
In a hotel, it's 'sweet'.

If its a collection of furniture, it's 'suit'.

I think.

8. "Sweet" in all contexts
Furniture salesmen seem to be unaware of this.

19. Furniture salesmen are correct
Both pronunciations are right according to the dictionary.
I guess it might be a regional thing as to which you prefer to use.

22. I disagree.
I looked it up in the OED, the AHD and the MW. Only the MW lists "suit" as a second pronunciation. Alternate is not synonymous with correct.

Dictionaries evolve over time to reflect popular use, not correct use. MW's inclusion of "suit" pronunciation of suite attests to that evolution.

23. AHD list the alternate pronunciation too but only for furniture sets
and I think that is THE direct connection for the acceptance of this pronunciation in American English.
"SWEET" on the other hand is the correct pronunciation for all uses.

25. Next thing you know...
"Hugh" will be an acceptable spelling of "huge" simply because of usage rates.

I think a few more furniture salespeople need to bone up on their vocabulary. I never ever heard suite pronounced as "suit" until I visited PA in 1995 and heard it on a television commercial. Since then, I've heard it again in Iowa, but nowhere else.

27. I've always thought it was regional.
Never heard it in New England, but then we pronounced aunt as 'ahhnt' unlike the rest of the country.;)

26. Well I guess we can agree to disagree then
It was listed as suit in the AHD as well as MW. Alternate is not synonymous with incorrect either.

18. That is actually more like it because there
is slightly more emphasis on the "su" part of the word. :)

17. It depends on context
A bedroom with an adjoining bathroom or dressing room is pronounced sweet.

The furniture in that bedroom suite is pronounced suit.

After reading all the other replies, I thought maybe suit is just my hick way of pronouncing it.

However the dictionary agrees with me.
