I looked it up in the OED, the AHD and the MW. Only the MW lists "suit" as a second pronunciation. Alternate is not synonymous with correct.

Dictionaries evolve over time to reflect popular use, not correct use. MW's inclusion of "suit" pronunciation of suite attests to that evolution.

and I think that is THE direct connection for the acceptance of this pronunciation in American English.
"SWEET" on the other hand is the correct pronunciation for all uses.

I think a few more furniture salespeople need to bone up on their vocabulary. I never ever heard suite pronounced as "suit" until I visited PA in 1995 and heard it on a television commercial. Since then, I've heard it again in Iowa, but nowhere else.
