Sunday School Teacher Fired For Being Female (Women Can't Teach Men)

WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- The pastor of a church that has stopped letting women teach Sunday school said that won't affect his decisions as a city councilman in upstate New York.

Rev. Timothy LaBouf dismissed a female Sunday School teacher this month, saying a woman can perform any job -- outside the church.

The First Baptist Church in Watertown dismissed Mary Lambert Aug. 9 after adopting what it called a literal interpretation of the Bible.

The reverend recently dismissed Lambert, who had taught Sunday school for 54 years, citing the biblical advice of the apostle Paul: "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."

Lambert has publicly criticized the decision.

The church board said other issues were behind Lambert's dismissal, but it did not say what they were.

LaBouf, who also serves on the Watertown City Council, issued a statement saying his stance against women teaching men in Sunday school would not affect his decisions as a city leader in Watertown, where all five members of the council are men but the city manager who runs the city's day-to-day operations is a woman.

"I believe that a woman can perform any job and fulfill any responsibility that she desires to" outside the church, LaBouf wrote Saturday.

Mayor Jeffrey Graham, however, was bothered by the reasons given Lambert's dismissal.

"If what's said in that letter reflects the councilman's views, those are disturbing remarks in this day and age," Graham said. "Maybe they wouldn't have been disturbing 500 years ago, but they are now."

11. Let me tell you about Watertown.

It is represented by Rep. John McHugh (R - of course) and it's situated near the junction of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. They get somewhere around twelve FEET of snow a year, and winter temperatures of minus 30 or colder are not uncommon. We call people who lived in that part of New York State "frozen brains."

Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, is about ten miles away. The existence of the 10th Mountain Division allows a lot more retail traffic than would otherwise be exist in a small city of about 15,000 people. When the 10th Mountain Division deploys, which is fairly often even in "peacetime," many Mom and Pop establishments (those who haven't been eaten by big chains like Wal-Mart/Sam's Club) close up shop as if Watertown were some kind of seasonal tourist destination (it isn't).

Watertown is also home to numerous grotesquely obese people, particularly women. Even the high school kids working at the local McDonald's, where normally the best looking young ladies would be working the counter, are fat. I guess the fact that a 16 ounce ribeye at Art's Jug (a popular local restaurant) is a "small" steak might have something to do with that. Let's say the definition of the phrase "portion control" isn't something they teach at the community college's business management department. Seriously, there is little to do in Watertown other than eat and drink.

Apart from being fat, Watertowners are as rude as Frenchmen, without the redeeming features of that particular group. Perhaps that's part of being a military town, but people in Columbia, South Carolina, home of Fort Jackson, were rather nice. It's gotta be the climate.

On the positive side, there is also an Olmstead-designed park which is pretty nice. It has a really cool sledding hill that we used to use when we were stationed at Fort Drum. Still, we were so happy to see that place in our rear-view mirror.
