Opinions needed: rummage sale prices

We're having a rummage sale this weekend and for the most part I'm all set. I put prices on the things as I was setting them aside but now I'm second guessing some decisions--especially on the clothes. I haven't been to many yard sales lately, and I haven't had one, well, ever so I'm not sure if I'm asking too much for some things or if I can get away with asking more for others. I'm trying to keep things priced low to get rid of them, but I wouldn't mind making some dough either.

Can I give you some examples so you can tell me what you think?

T-shirts--$.50-$.75

Pants (jeans, slacks for work, etc.)--$1.00

Shirts (work shirts, etc)--$2.00

Sweaters--$2.00

Nicer shirts (never worn Christmas gifts, vintage shirts in good condition, etc)--$3.00

Nicer sweaters (never worn Christmas gifts, vintage sweaters with beadwork in good condition, etc)--$3.00

Dresses (vintage)--$3.00

Shoes (worn a few times or never)--$1.00/pair

So...is that fair? Think people will go for it? Is $3.00 for clothes too pushy for a yard sale, or about right?

1. That sounds about right, although

you might be able to get away with a bit more for the vintage stuff. Especially the beaded sweaters. I know from personal experience those are mighty hard to come by at thrift stores these days, and I personally (provided I wasn't a broke ass cracka :() would be willing to pay significantly more for some cool ones. ;)

and if nobody is willing to fork it over I'll slash the prices on day two down to $3.00.

I tried selling them to a resale place and they didn't want them. They said, (about one sweater), "look, it has a tiny hole in it so we can't take it."

The damn thing's 50 years old! Of course it's got a tiny hole in it somewhere. You should bring your broke ass on down anyway--we've got records for sale, for cheap. Good ones. (Well, relatively decent ones anyway. The good ones go to ebay nerds.)

5. when you are talking about chump change like that

i am assuming you don't have shipping containers full of stuff, i'd just give it away to poor people, homeless people, and others who don't have shit.

8. Well, I'm broke so that "chump change" matters to me. A lot.

If I have stuff left over I'll probably donate it to Goodwill, but I'd rather try to make some cash first. And, I laready donated a few bags of clothes to Goodwill this week. The stuff I'm trying to sell at the yard sale is stuff people will probably pay for so that's why I held off donating this stuff too.

7. not sure how well clothes sell at yard sales by you

here, only the baby clothes really sell. There is a thrift shop in town that has a wider variety and sells things at the prices you are quoting. You may be spending more time on organizing & sorting the clothes than you get back in sales.
If you do decide to continue, you should take the advice that everyone gave you about the vintage stuff. Up the prices on those. The beaded sweaters are still very popular and harder to come by.

10. I've got everything already sorted...

I'm moving so as I was packing I set things aside and labeled them. I'm a little worried about how they'll do, but I don't have too much stuff clothes-wise, and we do have a hipster-contingent in the neighborhood that might go for them. Our local thrift store/resale boutique sells the stuff too, but--and I can't believe I'm saying this--thank god they mark everything up like crazy. I'm hoping in this instance people will figure out that my stuff is at least half the price of the store's.

my brother had a coworker who did that and was making a pretty penny at it....

granted you might have to sell it on line because you don't want the kind of person who would buy that coming to where you live.

22. in my experience...

...a "rummage" sale is held by a church or school. A sale held at home is a garage sale, porch sale, or yard sale. In the East, sales held at home are tag sales.

and I say yard sale. I learn something new everyday! :P

In my town you have to have a permit to take furniture and big items
to the dump... er...recycling center.
I just have a "Free! Take me! 'sale' and people do! :rofl: Saves me time and $$!

Some of their customers include Johnny Depp and Sly Stallone.

This company has been in business for 20 years in Vancouver. They sell vintage used Levis for between
$700 to $1500 per pair to Japanese retro clothing freaks. Good quality '70s leather and funky bead work sweaters are rare and premium priced. Also big amongst the Japanese are cotton and wool A line plaid skirts over jeans and leggings. I'm not kidding the Nippon parachute kids pay big money for this stuff.

If you have authentic '70s items you should also contact a stock
agency that acquires costume items in bulk. One good item could
pay for all the other stuff your trying to sell.

26. sounds reasonable to me

some of the rummage sales I go to, they charge way to much for their items. One rummage sale, this old lady was selling old tshirts for 5 bucks a piece, and I'm not talking good tshirts, I'm talking tshirts you can get at home shows, or big conventions for "free." Some rummage sales are pretty good, with clothes, I tend to go pretty cheap, much like your prices above.

The last rummage sale my wife and I put on, I was trying to sell a carhart jacket that I haven't worn in years...damn thing was still "Brown!", and I was selling it for 5 bucks, and peeople would scoff at me over the price, and I'm like, WTF? A new one costs over 50 bucks at the damn store! It also had the wool lining too...still got the jacket in my closet...one day, I will be small enough again to wear it...:)
