1. There's the GIMP (don't laugh)

It's free, so that's good. It's quite capable, but it's notoriously tough to get to grips with. Could be worth a look though; I use it myself. http://www.gimp.org/

Gimp, not so much. But it is a great program.

5. Picasa by google is FREE and awesome.. it is just a fantastic program

that works great, is really user friendly and takes up very little space.

8. Corel Paint Shop Pro

I bought it on Amazon for $49.95. It's a great program, supposed to do anything Photoshop does and is much cheaper. I LOVE it.

9. I have Corel Paint Shop Pro X

and it's great, at a fraction of the cost of PhotoShop. I think we paid about a hundred bucks for it, but you might find it cheaper. This version is much more user friendly than early versions of Paint Shop, at least for this newbie to photography.

Paint Shop Pro is great and a lot of people use it. It can use almost every single filter and special effect that Photoshop uses as well. It's $80 at most stores--I saw it at Best Buy.

17. Yet Another GIMP Vote

It's about as close to Photoshop as you can get and it's FREE!!! It does have a steep learning curve but so does Photoshop. That steep learning curve involves completely mastering the program. It's pretty simple with both to simply start messing around and creating new things.

19. GIMP is free, but Nova PhotoImpact 10 looks and feels similar to photoshop

and is $90 before rebate. Worth the price; GIMP is rather tedious to use and whose user interface is unrefined.
