Tips on painting a guest bedroom. Seeking creative ideas.

I want to go with a sunbleached New England coastal look so I'm thinking of doing some combing touches with pale yellow & off-white. The pale yellow will be the bottom color and the off-white will be combed on the top in irregular vertical strokes.

Now, here's the question: What is the rule of thumb for painting walls? If I do this to all four walls, will it look more dramatic than if I painted a fourth wall a solid yellow? Can I introduce a third color without getting too garrish?

Next question: I know a flat paint will be a better choice in giving me the sunbleached, distressed look I'm looking for, but are there any other techniques I'm overlooking?

2. yellow can be a hard color to work with...

what color are you painting over? I am thinking that I would not do all 4 walls. Maybe the wall with the bed I would do solid yellow:shrug:

5. Good to know about the yellow.

I'm going with a dirty pale yellow shade so I hope I can control it. And I was exactly thinking about painting the wall the bed was on a solid yellow, but the way the room is laid out, it is the wall you see as you walk in, which means the combed walls will be separated.

I'm hoping my color choices will give me a different look. They'll be more subdued and I hope the lines won't be so defined.
