2nd big "Snakes On a Plane" surprise - it kind of bombed.
The first surprise, for me at least, was that it got a lot of good reviews. That, coupled with all of the pre-release hype, led me to believe that "Snakes on a Plane" was going to be a smash - possibly one of the biggest films of the summer.

Well, the studios released their weekend numbers today, and while "SOAP" did finish the week in first place, it did so with only $15.3 million, just barely beating "Talladega Nights" which is in its third week of release. It made only $4300 per screen, which is very low for a heavily hyped new release. "Little Miss Sunshine", by contrast, made $8200 per screen. Given the fact that this is a late summer release, "SOAP" can probably expect to finally pull in about $60 million.

I don't think you need to cry for anyone associated with the movie. It only cost about $35 million to make, pretty low by summer movie standards, so it will still turn a nice profit. But the sequel might be in danger, and I don't think anyone's going to be rushing to become next summer's internet joke.

Did you see it? How was it?

2. I plan not to see it...because they want me to see it, which makes
me totally not want to see it. Does that make sense?

I am kind of sick of snakes on a plane.

3. Saw it, loved it, laughed my ass off, had a blast
I made a special point to go on opening weekend to thumb my nose at the studios, the critics, the mainstreamers and the naysayers.

I only ever go to one or two movies in a year and this was my second. Clerks2 was the first.

I think I'll wait til next year for SoaP II and Clerks3. :P

Good times is all I can say. I mean it was everything I expected it to be.. and a bit better I might add. . .

I must admit (SPOILERS COMING UP) . . . I must be a cruel person caused I laughed when hte little dog got sacrificed :( . . .

Edit: I don't know why but I Think S.O.A.P will do good D.V.D sales. No evidence to support that just a feeling.

6. We saw Talledega Nights yesterday
Pretty damn funny. Better than I thought it would be, actually.

Now that the hype has subsided for Snakes On A Plane, I am now certain I won't see it.

7. It's a really good movie - you should go see it
I really expected to go in there and see a really bad movie but I was pleasantly suprised with what I saw and it kept me on the edge of my seats. That movie could have really sucked badly but they put together a strong plot and plenty of suspense throughout the movie. I was pleasantly suprised!

8. Well snakes on a muther fucking plane
lot of people getting ready for school this week, on vacation, burned out on movies. At $9-10 per person, it better be good to go see it. I went to see the Ricky on fire help me Jesus record setting endorsements in one film NASCAR endorsed silly ass physically impossible Bobby film instead.

It was big ole fun.

13. The official word (it's not good)
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/comments/?entryid=355913

Following months of online buzz which translated into tons of national publicity, Snakes on a Plane finally arrived in theaters and collected an estimated $15.3M over the weekend including about $1.4M in Thursday night preview grosses. Taking off in an ultrawide 3,555 theaters, the R-rated film averaged a mediocre $4,290 per site. Of the 62 films in history that have opened in 3,500 or more theaters, 61 have grossed more than Snakes on opening weekend. Only last summer's Herbie: Fully Loaded fared worse with $12.7M from 3,521 sites following a Wednesday bow. Snakes also suffered the second lowest gross for a number one opener this year after Glory Road's $13.6M top spot bow in January.

Since no film before it had generated the same type of grassroots hype, expectations varied greatly leading into the frame with most believing it would at least surpass the $20M mark. The New Line release finds Jackson playing an FBI agent escorting a key witness on a commercial airliner when deadly snakes are let loose. The studio did not screen the film for the media ahead of the release. Fans on the internet have been talking up the picture since last year creating a cult fan following which no one knew how to measure when it came to box office sales. Ultimately, Snakes did not appear to have had much appeal outside of its core fan base of young men. With a budget of only $30M, Snakes on a Plane should still end up being a moneymaker for New Line after worldwide DVD sales are tallied. However, hopes for a new franchise seem to have been crushed.
