My neighborhood

I have an empty house to the right that has been empty for many years.

I have people living to the left who I question sometimes, but they seem alright.

I have a disabled man living across the street that I never see.

I have neighbors on the far corner that I never see either. I see their dogs all the time, and hear them too, but I never see the people.

I have empty spaces all over the place.

What is your neighborhood like?

Two lane country highway with neighbors on the sides about 1/4 mile away each. I like it this way.

3. well, I have trees for neighbors and the deer and the rabbit

are my friends...sometimes a Hawk goes flying overhead, he'll dip his wing as a way of saying Hi:hi:

8. It has a lot to offer.

I just moved here at the end of April and still miss my old neighborhood in the city, but there's a lot of interest here. I have to control myself in some of the cool shops.

10. We live in a 24 story apartment building.

The neighbors to the west side of us are snotty, loud and we suspect into S&M (There are chains that clash on the wall dividing our apartments. It makes it hard to watch tv). The neighbor to the East of us is a really nice guy. He's from India we think. He works like 3 jobs. He's never home. He's always very friendly when we see him. I don't know any other neighbors, although we are friendly with everyone we see in the elevator and such. And as for our neighborhood, here are pictures of our views from our apartment.

13. I've lived in this house since 1961

With breaks for the Army and time in Petoskey and Florida and so on. It's been the family house since '61 and has been owned by us since grandma G bought it in 1952.
The neighborhood hasn't changed much in 45 years. There have always been people of color as neighbors though Saginaw itself has a reputation (IMO undeserved) as a largely segregated town. I know the names of all the people on my block and it is the kind of neighborhood where we watch out for one another and where you can go next door and borrow a cup of sugar.
In fact, Johnnie next door came by around midnight two nights ago and dropped off a couple of beers because his family had been having a party and he thought I could use a cold one. Yes, we were invited to drop in for the festivities, but one doesn't want to intrude, does one? My neighbor on the other side, Tom (who is a glass salesman), saw me building my yard shed this spring and saved me a couple of very nice aluminum-frame windows his crew pulled from a house during renovations.
Across the street is a halfway-house run by First Baptist Church for men who've run afoul of the law. No fights, no drugs or liquor, quiet by 10 pm (actually pretty quiet all the time).
One house that's been abandoned since Mrs Shattuck died fifteen years ago. Tom may well buy and renovate it. I hope so. Dennis on the corner has a nice all-Democratic family, works at Delphi and has a nice ten-year-old golden retriever.
This is a wonderful urban neighborhood. Looks a lot like America -- or like what America SHOULD look like. I love it here and will never move.

14. Church, school, mysterious hard of hearing person...

My husband can play his electric bass as loudly as he wants!

Mucho deer, skunks, squirrels (though fewer than there used to be, what's up with the squirrels??)

You're right -- it's just been the last couple of years that the squirrels moved out and the skunks moved in. A while back a couple of skunks were wrestling in my driveway -- they rolled right under my car! I freaked. Who does one call in a situation like that?!

15. My space is pretty full...

Cats, fish, birds (and bees of course), flowers, trees, rabbits, chipmonks, squirrels, deer, vines and wine and dust and dirt and noise therefrom, and not so close but still in the "neighborhood" bear and mountain lions. Oh and a bob cat that dropped by once. Well, let's not forget the raccoons, opossum, and skunk.

You want the raccoons? They're yours!

I live in wine country. And that's a good thing... except for the dirt, dust and noise.

16. My neighborhood is perfectly groomed. Each weekend

the lawn and garden caretakers descend. Somebody is always "improving" their massive but lovely antique home. Most of the people are decent, but have not experienced poverty or even middle-class. There are some exceptions. I'm one. We certainly don't have anybody lying on our lawns... nobody answers their front door because it will be a solicitation... friends and family use the side door. What we do get are tourbuses to see S. King's victorian with the black wrought-iron gate featuring dragons and a huge spider. Two streets over on either side and the "quality" of the neighborhood becomes less sterling, dramatically so. Bangor is not a wealthy town and the good areas are relatively scarce. I will be moving to one of these as soon as this house sells. We'd have sold even without the divorce... heating and maintenance are ridiculous. Besides, I like regular folk who don't snort when you tell them you went to University of Oregon. You know?

I live on a busy street, in a small farm town, in the 'burbs. This used to be a
'blue collar' town but then the yuppies found it. My neighbors wave or nod hello,
as they drive by but we rarely have conversations. In fact, I just met one neighbor,
who jogs by every morning, only because he got my mail by accident!
And I've lived here for about six years now!
There aren't any vacant homes in this town (unless up for sale) or vacant apts.
It's hard to find a place to rent, if you're looking. They go fast.
It's ok here but boring. If I want entertainment, I have to drive for a while.

19. My hood...

I got my inlaws next door, they are literally a baseball throw away...across the street we have about 9 cows, who, when they cough, they should just like a human couging...about .2 miles down the dirt road is our next neighbor, they are very nice people, and the rest of our hood, is full of older, retired farmers, mostly...:)
