Of all the people you share a birthday with...
Who is your favorite?

Mine is Winston Churchill, born November 30, 1874. Exactly 100 years before me!

(does this count as a copycat thread?)

19. She won an Oscar, that gives her title in the UK
They make you a Knight of the Realm (or something like that) and Men get the title Sir, women the title Damme.

I remember at this year's Oscars that's all they would call her, it got soooooooo irritating.

28. Ah, I see - you're just spelling things wrong.
Yes, it's Dame (not Damme) Judi Dench (not Densche).

She is in the order of the Companions of Honor (limited to 65 people), which she entered in 2005. It's an order for people with outstanding merit in the arts, literature, music, science, politics, industry, or religion.

And she is a Dame Commander in the Order of the British Empire, which is the second highest rank (below Knight or Dame Grand Cross), and is the lowest of the two ranks which allow the title "Sir" or "Dame" with a limit of 845 members. I don't think these are awarded automatically for getting an Oscar - I bet there are many in the British Empire who have Oscars and are not part of the Order; unless they get one of the three lesser ranking ones (David Gilmour is a rank 3, Commander of the British Empire).

Neither of these honors, however, requires a change in the spelling of a person's name. :P

32. My bad
My spelling used to be so good, I hang my head in shame (though, honestly, I thought her name had an e).

Thaks for clearing that up. I know Alec Guiness was in there, Anthony Hopkins is in there, not sure who else (Paul McCartney?).

Thanks again for the info and the shaming of my spelling :P

Which is why I went directly to the books.

I'm totally over it now, but for a couple of years I tortured myslef (figuratively) over his approach to it (basically that it is something that will happen but should be strongly discouraged and is not part of "normal" behavior).

October 4.
H Rap Brown, Susan Sarandon and Charlton Heston share a birthday with me, too.
I don't have the dislike for Chuck Heston that most here seem to have. When my mom was a young (just past high school) woman, she dated a cousin of his. Chuck spent a lot of time at St Helen, MI -- about 70 miles north of here and so she had occasion to meet him on a few times -- several years before he became famous. She said he was very smart (mom was a member of MENSA, so she'd know), very gentlemanly and "very, VERY handsome."
I also think it's ironic that Susan Sarandon and Charlton Heston share a birthday (to say nothing about Mr Brown). Politically, they'd seem to be on opposite sides of the fence -- but then, Mr Heston marched with Martin Luther King when that was a damned daring thing to do. I've always suspected his NRA shtick has a lot more to do with his believing in the Constitution and all its amendments (the 2nd, 14th and 15th specifically) than any particular inherent fascism. And good for him.
John
The first Republican to become President through fraud, Rutherford B Hayes, shares an October 4 birthday, too.

81. Adolfo Pérez Esquivel (November 26)
Edited on Mon Aug-21-06 01:56 PM by catbert836
Argentine architect, sculptor and activist against the Free Trade Area of the Americas. Winner of the 1980 Nobel Peace Prize.

"We must apply our humble efforts to the construction of a more just and humane world. And I want to declare emphatically: Such a world is possible. To create this new society, we must present outstretched and friendly hands, without hatred and rancor, even as we show great determination and never waver in the defense of truth and justice. Because we know that we cannot sow seeds with clenched fists. To sow we must open our hands."

Although it was a tough choice betweeen him and Tina Turner ;-)

95. It's a toss-up between Samuel Clements and
Churchill for me. My Great-great grandmother was employed by the Churchill family so I am emotionally drawn toward Winnie, but Mark Twain's California connection is a strong pull, too. Both were unique in their own ways and I'm proud to share my birthday with them.
