Just how "self-taught" an artist was Vincent Van Gogh?
For some reason, I grew up believing that Van Gogh was a completely self-taught painter. But the Wikipedia article n Van Gogh mentions that he attended a formal art school at least twice in his life, and occasionally studied under other painters. So, unless I'm mistaken, it sounds like Van Gogh wasn't a self-taught artist, after all.

I dunno beans about being self taught versus schooling. I just like his work.

4. He IS my favorite artist.

I was fortunate to see his work at the Rijksmuseum in
Amsterdam many years ago.

The entire day was spent there, going from room to room,
filled with his paintings! It was heavenly.

;-)

8. I saw a few of his works in person at the Met in NYC, and I was amazed
with the vividness of the colors in the paintings. Photographs of his work just don't do it; you have to see Van Gogh's paintings up-close in-person. I forget exactly what specific works I saw -- I think they were flower studies from his last couple of years -- but the colors were blinding, unreal. His paintings were super-thick with paints, globbed on.

6. He wasn't self-taught
He developed his own style, but that's a different thing. He had formal art training.
