Poll question: Best Pink Floyd Instrumental Track?
Including the tunes that only have one spoken line or something like that.

Post in this thread to tell me if I've forgotten any.

3. Yes, but...

SoYcD Part VII has lyrics, doesn't it?

On edit: Here they are

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
and sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!

Or were you talking about Part Two of the suite, with the introduction of the four note theme and Gilmour's first solo?

6. Part II of the suite
I don't have my CD with me here and I always thought it was actually part 5 or 6 but according to RealPlayer it's part 2.

Are you talking about Part 2 out of 9 or two out of 2?

8. There are 9 parts total
On the CD though they are arranged in two blocks--parts 1-5 and parts 6-9. I believe that the part I like most is actually #6 though RealPlayer lists it as #2. I'm guessing that RP combines 1-5 into one, and 6-9 into one as well, rather than breaking them down, since some of them are very short and they all blend into one another.

11. Ah Yes.

I wonder if anywhere there is a complete, unedited, unbroken-apart version of the song. You can listen to Pts. 6-9 right after Pts. 1-5 from the CD, but it's kind of ruined by the wind effects from the end of Wish You Were Here. And the versions on A Collection of Great Dance Songs, Echoes and P*U*L*S*E are severely edited down (although PULSE doesn't count anyway, because it's live).

2. Definitely Great Gig in the Sky,
as much as I like the others, this one is my absolute favorite. I could listen to it over and over again and never get tired of it.

And what about "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun?" And most of the songs on the "Animals" album, some really great music there.

4. We're talking instrumental tracks
namely, those that have little or no lyrics. While the songs you mentioned are classic Floyd, they all have lyrics.

9. Two of those are disqualified
"One Of These Days" features Nick Mason's vocal debut just before the coda, and "Great Gig In The Sky"'s beautiful scat singing technically absolves it of being an instrumental. ;-)

10. I addressed that in the OP...
I included those with just one line of lyrics and such.

12. Slippery slope
Because then I will want to start including tracks with just a few lines... with Floyd, I don't want to stop listing tracks... :D

13. If I didn't include
"Careful With That Axe", "One of These Days", or "Great Gig in the Sky" because they had one line of lyrics (their title) or screaming, then it would be a rather uninteresting poll, don't you think?

15. Yes
It would be uninteresting, and truthfully, by relaxing the definition of an "instrumental", it didn't ratchet up the interesting quotient by any noticeable degree.

14. Actually, there really aren't any
lyrics in that, the vocals are just scatting the melody; therefore, it's still an instrumental.

16. No and Yes
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 02:14 AM by ZombyWoof
Technically, all songs are "instrumentals", because the voice is an instrument, causing the poll to exist upon a false premise. All Pink Floyd songs are therefore "instrumentals".

But if one were to entertain the idea that the presence of a human voice delineates an "instrumental" from a "non-instrumental", then you are creating another false premise by differentiating between pitched mouth noises that form words and pitched mouth noises that scat a melody.

Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With a Pict Lyrics

"Aye an' a bit of Mackeral settler rack and ruin Ran it doon by the haim, 'ma place. Well I slapped me and I slapped it doon in the side and I cried, cried, cried."

"The fear a fallen down taken never back the raize and then Craig Marion, get out wi' ye Claymore out mi pocket a' ran doon, doon the middin stain picking the fiery horde that was fallen around ma feet. Never he cried, never shall it ye get me alive ye rotten hound of the burnie crew. Well I snatched fer the blade. O my Claymore cut and thrust and I fell doon before him round his feet."

"Aye! A roar he cried frae the bottom of his heart that I would nay fall but as dead, dead as 'a can be by his feet; de ya ken?...and the wind cried back."

While it's classic Barrett, it is excluded from being an instrumental.

25. I'm surprised no votes for "Marooned"
although it's debatable whether that's real Floyd, it was the only song any band going by the named Pink Floyd won a Grammy for.
