I'm the proud owner of a cordless, rechargeable, electric Lawnmower
for years I have HATED what I was doing whenever I mowed
the lawn - noisy, polluting, stupid and time consuming..

Now it's still stupid and time consuming, but
no longer noisy and polluting.

Yes, I know, electricity comes from fossil fuels. But if
you recharge during the evening, using
"spinning reserve" power, you are increasing the
efficiency of the utility system.

Anyhow, it sounds like a kind of quiet vacuum cleaner, and
cuts real well. It's very light, and totally easy
to turn on and run.
Battery lasts five years. ( In five years there will be an easy
way to recycle that..)

2. Please move to my neighborhood!
During the summer, the lawnmowers never stop. I used an old-fashined push-mower until about five years ago. As I got older, it took longer and longer to mow the lawn; I was up to three hours when I switched to a gas mower. I love the idea of an electric mower. I'll have to start saving my pennies to buy one.

3. I have used an electric lawn mower for fifteen years but have to haul the
cord around after me. A cordless would be nice but I wonder if it has the same power mine has. My community is on hydropower so a lot of the guilt is gone...

4. Here's my Epinions review of the Neuton mower:

Our power is primarily hydro, currently about a nickel per kilowatt-hour.

19. We purchased a Neuton several months ago.
It is absolutely fabulous! So quiet and light weight and very powerful. We're slowly planting our entire yard either in garden, fruit orchard or flowers. It certainly entices more "critters" -- birds, butterflies and box turtles all over our yard. Plus, please no chemicals in our lawns, especially if you have pets.

28. I got a "Jimmy" Neuton.
It sure does pull in the grass fast. So the compost pile gets lots of fresh grass...

Much better idea than electric mowers with power cords to run over.

I want one of those! I bought a reel mower at the thrift store for $20.00, which is powered by my energy. It's better for the grass and reel mowers cut the grass in such a way that you can leave the clippings for mulch. I can't bring myself to buy a gas mower, or even an electric one because they're not only expensive, but right now I'm using less non-renewable energy and am creating almost zero pollution (other than my own sweat and CO2) with the mower I have.

8. Hate to brag but...I just finished cutting the lawn with my 20" Lee Valley
push mower so no energy source was used to cut my grass. BTW I got great advice on my purchase from the DU energy forum. Hats off to them! I love it. (and I just got back from vacation and the grass/weeds (no chemicals) were tall-and no problemo!)

11. I love my Black & Decker one, too!
I've had my Black & Decker cordless, battery-operated mower for about 7 years now, and I absolutely love it! It's so quiet, you can barely hear it next door, and I don't have to breathe the fumes from a gas-powered mower. Several years ago, I had an electric mower with a cord, but I hated having to deal with the extension cord. This one's a dream!

The downsides are:

  • It can only handle about a 5,000 sf yard without recharging. Bigger lots would require cutting over at least two days.

  • You can't let the grass get too long, or else it won't cut it.

I can live with those negatives, though!

The bad news is, I don't think Black & Decker sells them anymore - too bad!! I guess it's the Hummer vs. Hybrid syndrome - I see my neighbors using riding mowers to cut their postage-stamp sized yards, so there probably isn't a big demand for the electric mowers - not to mention the fact that they're about twice the price of a cheap gas mower. Higher gas prices won't translate into higher demand for electric mowers, unfortunately.

24. Just bought my B&D in June at Home Depot
here in Texas. Wanted something quieter, no fumes, don't have to keep gas around, just pull it out and mow. You're right about the yard size limits, but with the heat, taking your time is healthier anyway.

I've never looked at them because I think my lawn is just too big.

18. I ordered a new version of the old manual push mower
from a company named 'American'

It cost about $130 online. Now I positively gloat as I mow. It makes kind of a racket, so I know my neighbors are looking on with envy, probably saying "It'll never work."

But, it does. They already hate me because I think grass should have a chance to grow some complete blades before you butcher it. It keeps the weeds down and the moisture in. I have the only non-fertilized green lawn in the neighborhood. All of the others are dead now as the rain hasn't been great, but my manual push-mowed, hippie lawn is thriving along with my huge garden I expanded this year to cover even more of the green stuff. (just to annoy the jerk who turned me in to the association last year for not mowing) :P

22. I would love to have one of those, but my mowing area is too big
I mow close to six acres now, thus I need the use of a rider. My current one, a John Deere, is gas powered. However, within the next couple of years I plan on buying a small, diesel engine tractor that comes complete with a finish mower that I can use. And since it is diesel, I can make bio-diesel to power it.

For right now though, I'm stuck with gas, as much as I wish otherwise.

23. Be sure to keep the blade sharp
I had an electric mower for a while, but it didn't cut too well. They don't have as much power as a gas powered mower. A sharp blade will help.
