I began to eat every effing thing in site!
This is half rant and half "pity me" rant, although I really don't need pity - I need a little boast to my self esteem.

I am old (hey, why is my chin hanging on my chest and my chest on my waist?) - when did that happen?

I am fat - never was until 2 huge gains beginning 7 years ago! 1/2 of it happened first from quitting smoking (metabolism slowed down, ate more, less active and stressed out), then 3 years after that I gained another big amount after my husband lost his job and was out of work for almost a year. I try to lose, but not much luck - last year & half I walk 5 times a week at least 30 minutes each time (1.5 miles).

Last week I got laid off from job after 8-1/2 years and got nothing, notta, no severance, and not even a thank you.

So now I am old, fat and feel totally unappreciated!

How do some of you lose weight when depressed? - I am actually jealous of those of you that this happens to! All I do is gain! My "comfort" eating started again yesterday, a week after I thought I could get through this! I bought healthy foods and some junk foods that my husband likes but keep reaching for the potato chips and stuff all day long when I feel like this. What do I do?

1. Just keep your focus on the REALLY important stuff.
I happen to know that there is a very special event this fall/winter for you AND you have a fantastic family who love you a TON.

Maybe, I dunno... call one of your kids when you're feeling down instead of reaching for the chips?

2. The carbs and junk food create a vicious cycle.
You'd benefit from the South Beach Diet. It weans you off high-carb foods and gets the cravings under control. I did Weight Watchers, but after a while it became less effective for me. I used South Beach for the last bit of weight and use it day to day. It's not as hard to follow as most people think.

I also wanted to say I'm sorry you're going through all that. Stress does terrible things to people sometimes. :pals:

3. it's hard to discipline yourself...
after you already bought the stuff, so do it while shopping. Do not buy snack/junk foods, so you won't have that stuff to turn to when you're feeling down or nervous. Keep up your walking, that's great. And spend some time on the internet, blogging, looking for jobs, just to pass some time and keep your mind occupied.

4. I dunno how it works.
My wife's metabolism completely shuts down when she's depressed, and everything she eats puts on weight. My ex-wife would lose 10 pounds in a week if she was depressed.

Now, before you think all I do is go making wives depressed, remember that this is a small sample size. ;)

Anyway, like IsIt1984Yet said, try to focus on the good stuff. Accentuate the positive, elimin... nah, you don't want me to go there. Just try to keep your chin up. It's hard sometimes, and I say this as someone who struggles at times even when things are relatively good. But there are some good things about being alive. :)

BTW, I've lost 25 pounds since the beginning of June, and we're in the middle of declaring bankruptcy. Then again, my methods have been... unorthodox. So, do what you need to do. Keep your eyes on the prize and all that.

At least you live in the best city in the world.

10. Hey thanks,
I guess some people just deal with depression and stress differently and I am one of those, like your wife, where the metabolism slows - it must think I need to conserve!

and I say this as someone who struggles at times even when things are relatively good. - same for me and my kids, but on the other hand, everything always happens for the best for my sister and her family - the shitty thing about that is, they are Conservatives Without Conscience! So I guess it balances out - one struggles and things come easy for the other.

Sorry to hear your problems too. I will get over this, just need to release pent up hurt/anger.

5. I know how you feel, cmt.
I also eat "comfort" food when I'm depressed. Then I gain weight, which makes me even more depressed. I haven't had any success dieting when severely depressed, but when the depression lifts a bit, I can usually ease into a diet by cutting only some things out and eventually getting down to a real diet. I think I may have extra incentive because I have heart disease, and I can tell myself that my heart doesn't care if I'm depressed or not. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to talk about it.

6. You all give good suggestions,
I just have to focus and get my stubborn willpower back!

It's like I know what I should do, but it is so hard to always do what you should.

To top it off, the day after I lost my job I fell on my deck outside and have bruises all over that are still painful!

I am a mess! I just haven't cried yet over all this, so if / when I can have a good cry, maybe that will change the direction of my thoughts.

BTW, THANKS! - :pals:

9. Hugs to you, dude....
 Life can be a real bitch sometimes, and it sounds like it's thrown a lot at you recently. I hope things get a little easier soon. I agree with the suggestions to get online, find something to occupy your time, and keep walking. Is there something you'd like to get involved with while you don't have a work obligation? Volunteer work or some kind of community thing?

15. I do it by berating myself.
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 09:55 AM by redqueen
I am told this is not a good way, though, so... not sure what to say. The thing is, depression kills my motivation, so I replace that with anger, and get my energy from there. My metabolism is slowing and I put on 20 pounds the first six months of this year. I got depressed and stopped working out, which helped a lot. Also I think I'm going through "the change" early, so my energy levels have dropped substantially and I'm finding it nearly impossible to work out like I used to.

I'm just now getting back into doing some moderate excercise (yoga) and I'm trying to improve my diet. So I'll suggest those methods. I use Inhale on the Oxygen network and just do yoga in my living room a few times a week. I'm far too broke to go to classes, so that works best for me. And I've tried to cut out all unhealthy foods (and failed) but reducing my intake has helped a lot. I'm down 2 whole pounds. Woofrickinhoo. (hehe)

Good luck! Oh and also you might try to find a good support group. I'm told that helps a lot.

16. I will tell you what I did
Now some will find this as cheating, but after my wife and I started to have problems, she walked out all other kinds of stuff. I find my job unfufilling sometimes I had a gastric Lap-Band put in. I can tell you that it is not the total answer, but it does help. This may not be an option for you, but I have found it is a useful tool to help in my battle with obesity. I know how you feel, I stopped doing things that I loved to do because I was too heavy to do it anymore, but now I am on my way to a new life. Now i just have to work on getting my wife back.

Good luck!
