I LOVE Dusty Springfield

A tribute to the "white lady of soul" who just happened to start out as a folk singer!

This was where she got her start, doing folk:

Two of the only old ones where she isn't lip singing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIPadTwun8o&mode=related&search=

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_Bv2rSryy0&mode=related&search=

I love everything between that and this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XXz1O5pkPI&mode=related&search=

There's just lots to love about Dusty - like the fact that she was basically kicked out of South Africa in 1964 since she refused to play to segregated audiences in the land of apartheid simply because she felt it was "morally wrong." She owns the distinction of being one of the only female pop singers of the time to produce her own records all the way up until "Dusty in Memphis."

She was also the first pop singer to come out admitting in a 1970 interview that she could be with a woman as well as a man (although truth be told, all her relationships were with women).

She had a hard life though struggling with alcohol, then heroin and self mutilation for which she was hospitalized numerous times.
Her career was back on the upswing when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the late 90's/

She died in March of 99, one month short of her 60th birthday.

2. She may have been the "White lady of soul," but the "White man from town"
. . . from Stephen King's "Thinner" was more powerful.

B-)

Buddy was doing his hyper, ultra splashy "i'm the ultimate jazz drummer" shtick he was known to play

in that 'I only want to be with you' clip she seems to be singing live, it's great to view her control & way she rolls her nuance & inflections...i just think it's cool thanks for posting them :hi:

19. I picked that one because it was one of the few on YouTube
that wasn't a lip sinc'd song...same with Son of a Preacher Man although she is singing over the recorded tracks in that one.

Yeah, she was doing a show with him in NY and rumor has it he was unhappy with the fact that she got top billing...he insulted her and she slapped him. Apparently he filed suit over it...don't recall how that turned out.

(you know, from Austin Powers)

But there is an import release of Dusty doing nothing but Bacharach/David songs that are great..she was real good friends with Angie Dickinson and had a real connection with Bacharach

36. OOH, "Island of Dreams"
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 04:03 AM by Skittles
my dad was in love with Dusty and I heard her throughout my childhood - yes INDEED

not sure if this bit of trivia is true but it surely is hilarious:

Trivia: Dusty, a confirmed bisexual, did a concert in 1979 at the Albert Hall, in London. Princess Margaret was in the Royal Box. An army of hand waving lesbians and gay men greeted Dusty's arrival on stage. Then she wickedly announced, "I'm glad to see that the royalty here tonight is not only confined to the Royal Box." Princess Margaret did not understand the joke (lush), and questioned the remark, as she could not see any other royalty. When her escorts explained, the Princess walked out. That alone would have been worth the admission price.

40. She said something to the effect that the "queens weren't confined
to the royalty box" She later issued a written apology for it. It's actually on the Dusty Live at Albert Hall disc.

37. She was great
With an incredible voice and truckloads of soul in it, too -- the polar opposite of people like Mariah Carey and, even more so, Celien Dion who have technically flawless voices but zero to very little 'soul' (for want of aless loaded word) or emotion behind it...they're empty. Dusty Springfield's voice was anything but empty.

Thinking of it, it seems to me that she was one of the few female singers of the '60s and '70s who -- more gospel-infused voices like Aretha's aside -- had that big, powerful, soulful voice going on. Maybe I'm wrong. I love that kind of voice, but most examples I can think of -- and it's not by coincidence that they're among my favorite vocalists -- are men (Elvis, Tom Jones, Englebert, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and so on). Ooo....just thought of Tina Turner, so maybe I am wrong. Regardless, Dusty Springfield still stood out among her peers and perhaps even more so now, from the viewpoint of the popular music charts being mostly a desert for the past 20 years.

Has there been anyone on the pop music charts (as many DUers point out, there may well be some great people performing who don't get the commercial recognition and make it to the Billboard charts, but I'm not talking about them: I'm talking about the hits and successful acts that shape a generation's musical and other worlds) -- country, either, for that matter -- in the '90s or '00s who could hold a vocal or performance candle to the likes of the talents that jockeyed for the top spots between the dawn of rock 'n' roll and somewhere around the death of John Lennon? Nope. I don't think so.
