Poll question: Do you drink alcohol when you are depressed?
If so, does it work? Does it make you less depressed?

32. Ah, my favorite beer beverage...
good times!

Of course you have to drink it with the proper chant,

"Up the long ladder and down the short rope, To hell with King Billy and God Bless the the Pope, If that doesn't do, we'll slice him in two, and send him to hell with his red white and blue."

6. Yes, but it only works if I stop after a few.
I've learned my lesson about overdoing it, period, but especially so when I'm feeling bad. I wake up even MORE depressed the next day and stay that way for days later. But happy-hour drinking, or even poker-night type moderate drinking, can really cheer me up. I guess part of that is just being around friends doing something fun, though.

26. Same here. No booze for me because of medication.
I probably wouldn't drink now even if I could, because it's been so long, I just don't feel any need.

But I do *not* sit in any kind of judgement on those who drink. As long as they're not ribbing me too hard about my club soda! :)

nine years ago, I'd get depressed if I didn't have anything to drink. Ah, the good old days of bruised shins, and escape. I don't miss them at all. Kind of a love-hate relationship. Blue is %100 correct. Just got home from a hot, depressing day at work, and 'm feeling better already.:smoke: Thanks.

And you can forget that cheap Mexican shit that's dragged across the border. I'm a spoiled toker who demands some damned breeding, care in cultivation and expertise in drying/curing.

AK-47, White Widow, White Rhino, Bubblegum, Mazar, Afghan... ah, nature's finest.

It's just a damned pity that our $60 BILLION a year Drug War has made it so damned expensive.

It took care of all my problems until it was the only one left. And a big one, too.

But I'm one of the 10% or so of the population that can't drink at all, and I'm convinced it's genetic and physiological.

More power to the folks who can blow off steam that way, safely. :toast:

16. Sometimes a good depression deserves a good bender
For example, after breaking up with the love of your life. A one or two week beer binder fixes me right up.

Nothing like alcohol to feed a depression, and complement those melancholy blues.

B-)

43. No, I rarely drink, and rarely to excess
But there are occasions in which I find alcohol to have a medicinal, if not therapeutic value.

Making a fool out of yourself with a married woman, and then getting dumped for another man, is one of those occasions.

No, I don't smoke either.

made life worse. I stopped doing that 23 years ago. Now when I'm depressed like today, I try to find something to do to make the day more pleasant. You can't run away from your emotions. You have to feel them and deal with them. Tough to do but hey, I never promised you a rose garden.

40. I drink pretty infrequently without regard to depression.
I used to drink a bunch more, in frequency and quantity, but hangovers suck exponentially worse and for longer once you're over 30 or so. When I do drink, I usually still try for a buzz at least, depending on the situation.

The only thing I self-medicate with is pot, and it's better than any pharmaceutical medication I've tried yet. The only real drawbacks, other than whatever lung damage is caused by the smoking process, are the illegality and the obliteration of my already-languishing ambition to be a productive member of society.

A pint of ale now and again,
a champiagne kir royal,
or a pimms and lemonade on a perfect summer day,
absynthe in a nice green shot,
Cannabis in a nice fat joint,
heroin in a hygenic syringe,
cocaine in a perfect line,
LSD on a crumbling sugar cube,
shrooms on a technicolour afternoon,
water to quench the thirst,
sex to fuel the fire,
and a couple a glasses of wine to cool down.

49. when depressed
I don't eat or drink...nothing goes down if I dont feel good. But people are different in this. I have never known severe depression but I have certainly seen enough of it and understand why someone might seek relief in alcohol. But drinking when depressed (especially alone) is the dangerous kind of drinking, obviously. You don't ever want alcohol to become your "friend," your means of survival.

Alcohol can be handy when used medicinally in cases of a shock to the senses. I have had a couple of experiences of something very traumatic...alcohol was quickly available and that was a blessing. The depression came later, and alcohol was no help at all then.

Are you a medical researcher by chance?
