Why did women throw their panties onstage when Tom Jones was singing?
I understand the concept, but why is Tom Jones the only singer who is known for this? Not even Elvis or Sinatra or Rod Stewart or any other of the countless male singers/sex symbols were known for this.

What was it about Tom Jones that drove the ladies mad?

3. I guess they thought he was sexy!
Artist Bio
"Tom Jones" (born June 7, 1940) is a Welsh pop music|pop singer with a large and powerful voice. He was born "Thomas Jones Woodward" in Pontypridd, Wales. He married and had a child at the age of sixteen, long before becoming a pop idol. Despite frequent and much publicized infidelities, including an affair with the dethroned Miss World of 1973, USA's Marjorie Wallace, he has remained married and a family man. He lives in the USA, but makes regular visits to his native land of Wales.

Musical career

He rose to fame in the mid-1960s, with an exuberant live act which included wearing tight breeches and billowing shirts, in an Edwardian style popular amongst his peers at the time. Jones was awarded the Best New Artist Grammy in 1965.(More Info)

Following several hits in the UK, he became a Las Vegas, Nevada|Las Vegas lounge singer and his image quickly changed. He was known for his overt sexuality in the 1960s, before this was as common as it became in subsequent years. Ladies would swoon and scream, and in 1968, starting at New York's Copacabana night club, some would throw their panties on stage. Soon after, in Las Vegas, they started throwing hotel room keys.

4. Happened to Elvis a lot, too

...and room numbers, room keys, and so on, with legions of stuffed animals, flowers, pictures, nunchaku, joke glasses, and just about anything else people assocated with Elvis.

Good question, though.

I've never been tempted to throw my underwear at a singer before (of course, I've never been to a Michael Bolton performance), which is probably something the singers can be grateful for.

I'm going to Tom Jones' show in December, so I'll let you know then if I'm overwhelmed with the thong-tossing urge...

If Tom Jones were just a construction worker singing at women as they strolled by, I doubt they would be doing that. And even then, they would probably still expect him to do the dishes.

Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 07:22 AM by Iniquitous Bunny
It's a way to be sexual somehow without risking any true emotional or physical intimacy with another human being. Personally, it's not my style though. I'd be more likely to throw my undies at my actual partner.

10. Tom Jones staying at the hotel I worked at as a bellman ...
in the late 80's (Lowell, MA). I was in the elevator with a couple of his people and I asked what did they do with the underwear. He said they just throw them away.

The hotel staff and I also spent the evening trying to catch this female fan who kept sneaking into the hotel and trying to find Tom. Interesting eveing.

11. Context: It was 1968.
It was the times, my friend, the times. And I wouldn't trade it for all the youth in the world right now-I'll take "Wisdom for a thousand, Alex"

16. how odd
I had a cockatiel for a time who would react to "That's Amore." I actually tried to teach her how to whistle it. No luck in that, but she would go nuts at those first twelve notes.

My female cockatiel doesn't whistle or make much noise. Funny, this seems to be the opposite of humans. ;-)

24. Okay, so it's hard not to laugh at this picture...
But, used to be that a lot of women were into manly men. I like Tom Jones. Seems like a real solid guy, not a phony.

I wouldn't consider myself a fan, but he does have a great manly bellow.
