I need help deleting files from my Ipod
I clear the file in the library in Itunes, but when I update the Ipod, the files stay on the unit. What am I doing wrong?

1. Are you in your I-Pods library
or I-Tune's library? You have to be in your ipods library to delete files from your ipod.

2. Nevermind, I figured out why.
It's because I don't have a high speed USB 2.0 port. I can add files, charge my Ipod, but it doesn't have the OOOOMPH to delete files. Bummer.

3. Nooo... that's not true.

My guess is the same as reply # 1, you're not deleting from the right place in I-Tunes.

There are different "sections" in your I-Tunes library. One is your primary library and, when your I-Pod is connected it shows all the files on it. Under your I-Pod directory, there are other folders... be sure to click on the main I-Pod area (a little image of an I-Pod next to your I-Pod's "name"). ALL songs on I-Pod will appear on right - delete from here. I started out making the mistake of deleting from the subdirectories UNDER my I-Pod, which doesn't delete from I-Pod itself. Be sure you have the I-Pod directory selected.

See?? You want to select and delete from the one that has the lil pic of an I-Pod and the name of your I-Pod, not the folder called "Ipod". In this pic, it's the line highlighted in blue:

Initially, I'd delete from the folder just below called "Ipod" and they'd stay on the stupid thing. You have to be up one level. I HATE I-Tunes!!

5. Is that the problem? That it's not mounting (showing up in I-Tunes)?
or is it showing up and you can't delete from it?

That link is specific to it not mounting.

7. mount/update
basically the same thing. I am upgrading to a 2.0 High Speed USB this week-end and see if that doesn't fix it. They are cheap, so it's worth a shot.

9. Well, if it mounts, you will see the Ipod in I-Tunes and can alter content
If it doesn't mount, you won't see it and you can't.

I've used my I-Pod without USB 2.0 and not had a problem at all.

11. Ipods can be quirky depending on the machine
My tech friend had a customer who had a video ipod like mine and he couldn't charge it because he was using 1.0 USB. He put in a 2.0 high speed USB card and bam!! It fixed it. Different machines can have different problems.

8. That is what drives me nuts
It should just delete the files when I plug the ipod into my tower automatically, but it doesn't.

10. Personally...
I have come to HATE the Apple software with a firey burning passion. If I had it to do again, I would not have gone with an IPod.

Deleting/updating is a huge pain!

16. OK, that's your problem. Change it to manage manually.
The auto update will put them back when you sync. I HATE the auto options. Change to manual and then delete the files as inidicated above. When done, be sure to right-click on the IPod and click "Eject".

This manual option will allow you to drag and drop files.
