Me?

Love's me some Austin, Tejas music.

I swear to god, Austin doesn't belong in Texas. Austin, if you move to California, you can be our capital. Deal?

19. It is! Especially with good speakers that really produce...
...the deep bass that makes that song thump.

6. Heart's "Dog and Butterfly"
My favorite by them, besides the debut. I'm listening to side two of the LP, the soft/ballads side. Splitting albums between hard and soft sides is one of those cool (well, IMHO, anyway) customs of the vinyl era that CDs can't pull off quite as well.

22. Butthole Surfers - Pepper
Being in Austin, I hear a lot of cool stuff. My close friends are mostly in the folkie and jam band scene. For some really fun (and a little weird) music, I recommend my friends' band Grass. For folkier stuff, I recommend my old roommate Mo Pair and also his cousin Russell Clepper. Both are outstanding musicians.

32. Grateful Dead,
"Me and My Uncle": live, date unknown (unfortunately):

Me and my uncle went ridin' down,
South Colarada, West Texas bound.
We stopped over in Santa Fe,
That bein' the point, just about half way,
And hey, you know it was the hottest part of the day.

And I took the horses up to the stall,
Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all.
Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt,
It bein' summer, I took off my shirt,
And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt.

West Texas cowboys, they's all around,
Wee1 liquor and money, they loaded down.
So soon after payday, you know it seemed a shame;
You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game,
Yeah: High, Low, Jack and the Winner Take the Name2.

....

Pop3 start winnin'; cowboys got sore.
One of them called him, and then two more,
Accused him of cheating; Oh no, it couldn't be!
I know my uncle, he's as honest as me,
Hell, I'm as honest as a Denver4 man can be, that's me.

One of them cowboys, he starts to draw,
And I shot him down, Lord, he never saw.
Shot me another, hot damn, he won't grow old.
In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold,
And we high-tailed it down to Mexico.

Now, I love those cowboys, I love their gold,
I love my uncle, God rest his soul,
Taught me good, Lord, taught me all I know.
Taught me so well, I got that gold,
And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road.

Yeah!

...

1: W' or Wi' pronounced with an "e"-sound, so as to avoid confusion with "why" is my guess. The use of "w" to stand for "with" is common, but pronouncing it as "double-u" doesn't sound right.

2: A card game where betters bid the number of points they'll score if they get to "call" the trump suit. (The rules vary, but winning tricks containing the high, low, or jack of trumps typically counts for one point.)

3: Not sure, but "Pop" could be a familiar, but respectful, way of addressing an older man, especially a near relative.

4: For a long time I thought that this word was "Devil's" (in addition to misperceiving other words and phrases in the song -- a common failing of mine). Then I looked up the lyrics and found "Denver" instead of "Devil's" -- but there were some errors in the lyrics that I found, so they didn't inspire complete confidence. Now, when I listen expecting "Devil's", I (typically) hear "Devil's". But when I listen expecting "Denver", I (typically) hear "Denver"... Although sometimes I hear "deadly -- and sometimes I'm not sure. (sigh)

Perception can be a complicated thing: influenced (and distorted) by expectations, hopes, knowledge, (broader) perspective, state (of being), other predispositions, etc.

And sometimes the more you "think" about something -- or, more generally, try to perceive it (especially obsessively) -- the more this distorts your perception of that thing. Yet perception (taken broadly) is the foundation of many other things, knowledge, understanding, perspective, etc -- at least in part.

Life can be a complicated business, and it can be helpful to keep the fundamentals close to mind -- like the existence of misperceptions, misunderstandings and misjudgments.
