What marketing genius came up with "Sag Harbor" for women's clothes?
At JC Penney there is a line of clothing for mature women called Sag Harbor.

I mean, really.

Why not Perky Bay? Or Firm Estuary?

;)

6. I'm not a Hanptons wife wannabee and I just bought
a Sag Harbor blouse today. In fact, I am not even a wife. I am happily single.

2. I won't even mention the Dress Barn.
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 04:16 PM by CBHagman
Near my office is a store called the Dress Barn, as well as one called Dress Barn Woman (!). How equine or bovine or porcine are the implications there, hm? As if there weren't enough assaults on the self-esteem of the American woman.

On edit: That reminds me of something Dave Barry said about the name Dockers. He said they called them "Dockers" because calling them "pants for the bigger-butted man" was not regarded as a shrewd marketing move.

3. The Dress Barn should sell everything in a Holstein print.

And, yeah, Dockers. They probably also rejected: Pants for Chubby White Guys

4. Bad name. Halfway decent clothes.
There's one across the street from The Home Depot, and my wife has started shopping in there. It's one of the few mass-marketers that has stylish, adult clothing for the plus-size demographic.

Lane Bryant's okay but it's expensive because all those stores are in malls, Fashion Bug...ehh, a little too "you can look like you're 19 if you wear this" which is NOT the look you're going for if you're 38...pretty much everyone else's stuff needs to have "Gold Medal" printed upside down on it because the shit looks like it was cut from flour sacks.

The "Dress Barn" name, to me, doesn't say "self-esteem killer" so much as it says "cheap crap thrown on tables so you can dig through it." It ain't cheap anymore.

24. Dress Barn Woman...
I'll be your hired hand!
Dress Barn Woman...
I'll let my offer stand!
Dress Barn Woman...
Can't you see my saddle riding high???

Sorry, but I used to live around the corner from an outlet mall that had both Dress Barn and a Dress Barn Woman stores, and every time I saw the sign I started thinking of Spinal Tap.

we should plan a DU picnic or something! (or maybe I should, you did it last time!) ;)

I actually saw a few Casey bumper stickers - I took my son to Steeler Camp and we saw a few on the way.

27. Hippy - yikes! - not good
"Hippy" in this context isn't very good wording either. Sag, hippy, barn. Hey, how about starting a brand named "Chicken Little" for petites?
Oh well... :silly:

during the blueskying sessions.

not a great name at all, what are they thinking.
but these are interesting times, aren't they?

I don't have any research or backup, but I suspect there is a trend toward denegrating oneself with brand names like this. Its a purposeful marketing thing - bash yourself and be cool about it. Just another not so subtle step toward the debasing of the population.

 Sag Harbor is an awful name. Kohl's carries it too, and when I first saw that brand name, I said, "I'm not Sagging anytime soon. No thanks!"

I like Dress Barn too for basic sweaters, tops and dresses.
And don't forget Coldwater Creek. A little more expensive but nice.
