Apple/DSL question
Pardon my ignorance....I get internet through yahoo/sbc/dsl. My pc is old and I wish to replace it with a Mac. When I get the new Mac do I just plug it in like the current pc or do I first have to notify yahoo/sbc and tell tehm I have a new computer? Same question as to McAfee, who is my anti-virus vendor. Thank you.

1. Get a PC!

*giggle* *snort* Oh those wacky PC people.

You will have to configure the Mac to work on the DSL. Best thing to do is to contact their support people when you get the machine or goto their website and download/print any instructions for configuring it. Since you plugged it in to get the PC going, it sounds like there was software. Check with them for installation sofwtare for the Mac.

As far as McAfee goes, they will probably not honor your license and will charge you for a Mac version, if they make one (I believe they do, Symantec does). As with the DSL, contact them.

Good luck and enjoy your Mac. They're great machines.

2. It should connect pretty easily
OS X is very elegant that way. I would bet that configuring the Mac to your DSL will be effortless.
As far as McAfee goes, you probably won't need it anymore. I've had my eMac for over a year and haven't had one instant of virus or spyware or other malware.

God bless you, Steve Jobs.

3. We have an iMac and we're on Yahoo DSL too.
Plug and play. I did have to spend some time on the phone with a techie to set up our account, but it was painless. If your account is already set up, you may be good to go.

4. I've got a Mac, and have SBC( now AT&T)yahoo DSL.
Call tech support at AT&T( was SBC), get through the voice mail hell,
till you get a tech support human, and let them know you're getting a Mac.

I'm pretty sure you can use the same modem, but you will have different
settings and configurations for a Mac.

Since SBC merged with AT&T, they are now claiming to offer tech support
for almost any problem that comes up with your computer. I haven't checked
this out, but if true that would be great. I'm now out of warranty with AppleCare
and I'm on my own.

PS- Get the AppleCare warranty, it's worth it,IMHO.

Good luck

:hi:

7. I second that, the AppleCare is well worth the cost.
My eMac failed recently and it is covered by the AppleCare protection plan. (The eMac and most Macs come with a 1-year warranty, but the AppleCare plan extends it by two more years.) I took it in to an Apple store and they took it and said it would be ready in 3 to 5 days. Two days later they called and said it was ready. They completely fixed it, faster than I thought it would be, and charged me nothing. There is no doubt in my mind that the AppleCare plan is well worth the price. The only drawback is that the Apple store is so popular that it may take a day or two to get an appointment there.

6. It should be a simple matter of just moving the cord.
Take the ethernet cable that goes from the modem to the pc - remove it from the pc and plug it into the Mac. It *should* really be just that simple. If it's *not* - it's still a trivial matter to get set up. Most likely just going into the network connections and making sure the built in ethernet is set for DHCP.

8. Macs are pretty much plug and play.
When I got my high-speed connection (cable) I don't remember having to do much besides connect the cable modem to the AirPort.

9. You don't have to tell them.
Just check to make sure that your dsl hardware has a Mac driver. (99% do.) As for McAfee, you really don't need it as much with a mac. We've had macs since OS X came out (almost 6 years now) and never had a virus or even a hint of an internet-borne problem. So you can save a bit of cash by not needing to pay for the service anymore.
