Why would the Sci Fi channel not
bring back Firefly? The series has a HUGE fan base, seems to me it would be a win win for Sci Fi. I suppose evil Fox owns the rights? Pisses me off. I just got turned onto the series a few months back. IMHO it is brilliant. Any other browncoats out there?

1. They would rather show wrestling.
I flipped on SciFi last night and found... wrastlin! Supposedly it gets very good ratings. With the ties to NBC we are just one step away from loosing SciFi to a orgy of Law and Order SVU reruns with Detective Arrogant.

5. Considering the levels of modern, high-tech...
...chemicals those Rasslers use to get so huge,
it technically might qualify as "SCIENCE Fiction".

26. There's No Fiction About It
And a disproportionate number of those guys die young. Lots of science, but unfortunately, not fictional.

3. Great Show
I loved Serenity and then picked up the series on DVD (I'd not seen it when it aired). It really is a shame when good shows get cancelled. I know there a some real hardcore fans out there but I'm not sure of the actual numbers, i'm not even certain how well the movie did at the box office or on DVD.

4. Money.
It was an expensive show to make, and a BasicCable network
just can't do that very often.

I sure wish they'd bring it back too, but it's not gonna happen.
Even if every SF Channel viewer tuned in every week, it still wouldn't
provide the same $$$ return on investment as the dirt cheap reruns
that only 700 people watch.

6. Bleh how depressing.
I have the whole series and the movie on my Ipod. I can't watch it without getting sad. It is as close to "perfect" as I've ever seen in a TV series. The movie was wonderful as well. It was only made because of the fan base. Sadly it came out with the Star Wars finale which wasn't 1/2 as imaginative.

9. I thought "Serenity" was an amazing achievement.
Just the fact that it managed to wrap up all the loose ends
from the series was impressive enough.
But it actually did it, AND was a good movie as well.

18. That was a bummer, but a BRILLIANT plot move.( Caution: same spoiler)
Every other "adventure" movie, you always KNOW the good guys are gonna come out
OK in the end, no matter what.

But after Wash dies, the final minutes of Serenity are so much more
engaging because you DON'T know that anymore.

All the old movie clichés are no longer in force,
and it seems VERY possible that the good guys
might really fail and die in the end.

I can't remember the last time that happened.

19. Yup Joss said that in
his movie commentary. I still didn't like Wash dying. The scene where Mal asks Zoe if Serenity/Zoe will be okay is quite poignant.

11. The only thing I did not like
Was how they wrapped up Shepard Book. I thought there were a few references in the series where he was not really a shepard and would have really liked to see something at the end of the movie where it was even more strongly implied (or even stated out right) to set up a sequel.

13. One of my favorite things about the series and movies
is the syntax that they all use. (I hope I'm using that word correctly.) That colloquial western speak is very subtle but unbelievably effective.

SciFi has several original programs that do very well.

20. Several, yes. But not an UNLIMITED number.
They are a BasicCable channel that caters to a niche market;
that limits their viewer potential in a very real way.

There's a specific number of people who will EVER potentially tune
in, and a specific number of hours that they will do so per week.

Once SciFi hits its maximum viewers/hours ceiling, extra programs
don't translate to extra money anymore, they just divide the viewers/hours
differently.

7. Easy answer...
The suits at the Sci-Fi channel are a bunch of total assholes.

They do have Firefly marathons during the day on occasion.
But they'd rather put total shit like the new Battlestar Galactica on than actual *GASP* quality programs like Firefly.

Oh, and pro wrestling.

You don't like BSG? I enjoy it very much. The ending to the 2nd season was abit weird. I wonder where they will take it from there.

21. Still selling well.
A few weeks back, I discovered Amazon had a sellings ladder listed. Firefly was at # 19. Pretty good for a dead series.

Personally, I like the new Battlestar Galactica. I like the gritty drama. Now I'm waiting for a price drop on the DVD of season two. I'm not a sci-fi fan, but Firefly and Battlestar have won me over.

And the fan base is still growing. That is amazing.

23. 'cause they gotta put out twelve Stargate spinoffs
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 09:41 AM by Hong Kong Cavalier
and that costs money, don'tcha know.

They canceled Farscape, too, after they acquired Stargate SG-1 and suddenly refused to promote Farscape.
The reason they gave for canceling Farscape: it wasn't pulling in new fans.
(No shit, Sherlock. When you don't advertise a series anymore and give all of your promotional time
to a show with an already established fan base, of course you're not going to pull in new fans.)

And Fox does own the rights to the name Firefly as it pertains to this series.
At least, they did when the movie was being made, thus Whedon called it Serenity.

24. That's what I was wondering Hong Kong.
I don't recall where I read that dumb ass Fox didn't even want to show the series sequentially. They wanted to air the 2nd episode "Trains" before the actual pilot because it had more action. Bleh, the fuckers can't do news nor can they deal with a great piece of art like Firefly without fucking that up.
Apparently they also never aired it two weeks in a row cause the world series was going on or something like that. Assholes.

25. There's not a series out there that Fox can't screw up.
The show would have probably survived if they'd aired the pilot first.
But Fox is a bunch of idiots.

I'm way too familiar with Station Execs ruining (or at least trying to ruin) good shows. I'm a Babylon 5 fan.

27. I adore Firefly
That is one of the few shows I'd like to see more episodes of. Much as I liked Buffy and even Angel, I'd say they had a good run. I got tired of other shows I really liked at first even before they finished running, like West Wing and 24.

But more Firefly?? YES!!
