6. Question about the coda, when Travis was driving Betsy in the cab:
did you take that as happening within the same reality as the rest of the story, or did you read that as a dream or fantasy on the part of Travis?

Same question for another Scorcese pic: when Rupert Pupkin is a smashing post-incarceration success with his own television show, is that the film's reality or a character's fantasy?

7. I tend to take movies literally, so I thought it happened.
On the otherhand the entirity of the film seems somewhat disjointed. Then again, life is not lived in neat narrative packets, so perhaps this is an example of realism taken to a degree where it alienates the viewer.

13. It's a fantasy of the dying Travis...
he's not going to survive those wounds.
Scorsese has always been very coy about this, but it's always seemed fairly obvious to me.

I also think that we are seeing Pupkin's fantasy, not reality.

17. I thought we were seeing Pupkin's reality.
Probably because things do happen in a fucked up way like that.

I think that Scorsese was making a black satire 25 years ago, but didn't realize just how prescient he was being

9. Harvey Keitel was supposed to be Puerto-Rican?

15. Yes, in Schrader's original script, Sport was supposed to be Black...
but the producers just didn't want to get into all that.

In the "candlelit Sport dancing with Iris scene", Keitel is supposed to visually echo an Indian. This was an homage to Scar and Debbie in "The Searchers" Actually, a lot of the movie is an homage to that film. Scorsese wanted to shoot a scene (that wasn't in "The Searchers") which explored the intimacy between the two characters...if Scar had a coke nail.
Both films are brilliant.

You walk out with those fuckin' creeps and lowlifes and degenerates out on the streets and you sell your little pussy for nothing, man? For some lowlife pimp who stands in a hole? And I'm square? You're the one that's square, man. I don't go screw and fuck with bunch of killers and junkies the way you do. You call that being hip? What world you from?"

"Listen you fuckers, you screwheads. Here's a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the scum, the cunts, the dogs, the filth, the shit, here is someone who stood up."
