Madonna Abandons Movie Career

Madonna has begrudgingly turned her back on her movie career, because she is convinced the media is hell bent on ensuring her film projects are flops. The singer was lauded for her performance in the big screen adaptation of the musical Evita, but she has suffered a string of flops, most notably Body Of Evidence and Swept Away, her last movie role directed by husband Guy Ritchie, which failed to secure a cinema release. And the 47-year-old, who is currently in the midst of her Confessions world tour, will concentrate solely on her music career from now on. She says, "I hate to admit it, but I've decided to give that up. How can any film survive if everyone says it's going to be a flop from the very day the project is even conceived? It's already dead in the water."

Well that took long enough for her to figure out that she's really not that great as an actress. I think she had 3 decent movies (Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy and Evita - yes, I loved Evita) and outside of that she pretty much sucked

1. Maybe she should direct or produce
I've never been a big fan; but she impresses me as being pretty savvy about the biz. She certainly knew what it took to make a successful pop music career.

2. Madonna can't really act.
I never saw Evita, but what I have seen her in she's just wooden. I admire her as a cultural icon and performance artist but I think that the strength of her personality and her dominant nature are what have prevented her from developing the kind of empathy it takes to be able to act, i.e. to imagine a different perpective from your own and personify it. When you spend your life running right over people with sometimes you don't pick that up. Of course, Courtney love seems to be able to act but that's because she's been through hell in her life, even though she's got the same kind of dominant personality.

16. Evita was the longest Bad Music Video
I've ever seen.

I was soo glad I could fast forward through the thing, otherwise it would have been 2 hours of my life I'd never get back.

24. Evita was less than a pimple on Helwig's skinny German ASS.
When Ms. Ciccione made Evita, the _WORD_ 'musical'
sued her for "Defamation of Character".

4. Madonna doesn't totally suck as an
actress but I think she concentrated on dramatical roles which were out of her skill level. I think she was really good in "A League Of Their Own" playing a wise ass. Her ability, imo lies with light comedic roles. And that is what she should have limited herself to.

5. I agree with you
She was pretty good in Dick Tracy too. But I think Evita was over her head.

6. i.e. when Madonna plays Madonna, she's good at playing Madonna
I can't understand, with a $600 million dollar fortune, why one can't be satisfied with knowing she's only slightly less well known that Madonna 1, mother of Jesus Christ. I'm all for ambition, but the point of making money is to be happy and comfortable in life, not to never be satisfied.

8. I thought she was great in Evita since basically it was all singing and
playing conniving woman who sleeps her way to the top.

11. Thank the gods!!!
What a waste of good celluloid that woman has been!

I had the unpleasant experience of seeing Dick Tracy in a movie house with a very basic sound system. Madonna was a crappy singer made that much more crappy by the bad sound. Her big solo number was absolutely horrific -- every bad note was heard clearly and amplified something fierce. :scared:

17. i liked a league of their own, too
but other than that I'd agree with your list. She's not a great actress, by any stretch, and she's overmatched playing heavy dramatic roles. Also, she hasn't exactly chosen her projects well.

20. I doubt she's been getting any offers and she's saying this to save face
It's tough out there for actors over 40-let alone really bad ones. If it's possible, Madonna has just gotten shallower and more pretentious through the years and Hollywood knows it. :eyes:
