Do they do "the wave" at football games? If so, does everyone wear green as a special effect? :D

10. Yes, and they wanted everyone to wear green to the games
when I was in school, but basically the students gave the middle finger to that idea. :P  Fans still did "the wave", though.

Falcons. We tried every year to change it (to something actually relevant to the life of Saint Paul) and every year the administration ignored our request because it would infuriate the alumni...now I am an alumni and I bring it up to other alumni and I've never found one that cares.

Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 03:44 PM by MiniMandaRuth
Well, it will be.

Funny story. Right before the last day of middle school, we had this big party over at a friends house. She invited her two cousins, our age, one boy, one girl. The boy was pretty funny, but kind of a jackass. So, we were talking about our highschool, and he kept on going on about 'The Hornet is such a lame mascot!' and 'A bug! ooooo... I'm scared!!!'

And then up came this little yellow jacket and stung him right next to his left eye. Well, it was painful for him, but hi-frickin-larious to the rest of us.

On edit: And our middle school mascot was the Yeti! Well, unofficially. The teachers voted for Grizzly, but the students liked the Yeti more. So we were always the Glacier Yeti's to people.

A Kewpie Doll

An alumnus of Hickman High School, Columbia Missouri. We are the few, the proud, the dolls.

I must say however, it is a rather unique mascot, and not so bad once you get used to the idea. I also think that it inspired the sports teams to play better and tougher.

86. Paul Bunyan
Our high school teams were the Lumberjacks--fitting for a town in which EVERYONE is involved in the forest products industry in some way, either working with forest products or supporting those who do. There was also a school in our conference that called itself the Loggers, and our "cross-town rival" (they were 105 miles away--so much for cross-town rivalries, huh?) was the Miners for the same reason we were Lumberjacks.

In the early 1960s, Texaco had an ad campaign called "Big Friends." The gist was that if your car had broken down, your Big Friends at Texaco would scoop it up in their huge hands and walk it to a Texaco service station where a friendly mechanic would fix it.

This is one of those "Big Friends." How they got him is kind of a cool story...right across the street from the school, and in fact exactly where Keith was standing when he took this photo, is a Texaco service station. It's still there in its original configuration, complete with the two service bays where they still fix cars. They received a Big Friend. It comes disassembled in a shitload of boxes. They cleared off a place to put the Big Friend. They got a variance from the city to put the toes of the Big Friend a foot from the white line on Main Street because he wouldn't fit on the lot any other way. Then the gas station owner got all his buddies at the volunteer fire department and the ambulance service to come over and help put the Big Friend together. They got a keg of beer, drank it, then put the Big Friend together with his feet on backwards.

That shit don't work, guys. He would have fallen on a logging truck about a day after they put him up.

So they called the school board and offered to donate the Big Friend as a mascot. The Forest Service sunk the Big Friend's feet in concrete, and he stands to this day. When I still lived in St. Maries, he looked more like a present-day logger with a red shirt, no cap, no beard and no axe...the Sanders Road hippies offered to give him a makeover, which resulted in the fine Paul Bunyan mascot you see before you today. (Sanders Road was supposedly the origin of the Northwest's best marijuana, partly because of superior growing conditions and partly because the sheriff, America's last honest Republican, had so much cedar theft going on he didn't have time to hassle pot growers. The most fucked-up part? If you get a SMHS yearbook for the three years I was on the annual staff, you'll find that the pictures inside the front and back covers are ghosted images of Sanders Road. And yes, I did it on purpose.)

While I was there, the 1973 football team was the only one in Michigan history to go undefeated, untied and unscored upon for an entire nine-game season. Still are, as a matter of fact.

126. Rebels, too. Mascot was a Southern gentleman, with goofy hat and
mustaches, and a cane. I think it still is. The Confederate flag used to play a big role, too, but I think that's been banned since the controversy has given the flag a new meaning.

This is in Gulfport, MS, or rather, Lyman, which isn't really a town.

But it's true. The last go-round of "change the name" discussions ended with a total recall and revamping of the school board that proposed the change. The controversy was actually talked about on Jay Leno. It also ended with the name NOT being changed. It remains the Dickinson Midgets.

I would imagine that unless someone sues them, it's stay that way forever.

131. ZW, I haven't followed baseball in years,
no, decades.

Loved going to A-Ball when I first moved to MT eons ago. Those kids were a tad raw and green, but damn, they played with such passion. After that, Majors meant nada to me.

Saw Sutton square off against Nolan Ryan (when he was still with the Angles) in a Freeway Series pre-season game. Sutton was driving the home plate ump nuts with his 'substance on the ball?' psych. Ump was CONVINCED Don was doctoring the ball but couldn't prove it. Sutton just grinned, time after time, handing the ball over for inspection.

Ryan was hurling fire.

It was a great day at the ball park.

149. A Light Tower
We were in an old building (somewhere in the 1910's). It had this tall round colonade on the northeast corner of the original building. As far back as anyone could remember, it was lighted and the school used it as a victory light. So, when the teams won something, the light tower would be illuminated.

The school nickname was the Hilltoppers, because, yep you guessed it, the school sat on the hill overlooking the river. But, there was no Hilltopper mascot. The symbol used for everything was that light tower.

Good pun, btw.

We had Kingmen, Steelmen (it was a steel mill town back in the day) and Tigers, too. I went to an all boys' academy, so he had a sister school, called the Angels. Then another private high school was called the Celtics, and other nearby schools in our conference were the Knights. So, we sort of ran the gamut around here.

And, aside from the Celtics, i don't think we offended anyone! Sort of more progressive than i gave the area credit for being!
