Confronting the sexual abuse of animals
Veterinarians must mention the unmentionable, and confront the issue of people who sexually abuse animals. The call comes from Helen Munro of the Royal School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, UK, in a commentary published in the September issue of The Veterinary Journal (vol 172, p 195).

"The impression is that many continue to think of bestiality as a farmyard activity involving animals sufficiently large enough not to be injured, and therefore not much to worry about," she writes. "It seems that even in these modern times, the sexual abuse of animals is almost a last taboo, even to the veterinary profession."

4. I saw some horrible wretched things back when I groomed dogs.

One was a toy poodle who had been abused like that. It was hard to see him like that. His spirit was so beaten down, not to mention the physical damage. And the look in his eyes was one of shock and severe mental trauma. I've never seen another dog who had that kind of look in his eyes, before or since, thankfully.

We had to be careful not to harm him worse, but it was difficult considering. I don't want to go into details, but I was really bothered by the whole thing. Luckily, the local Humane Society had turned the guy in and he was being charged and the dog was taken away. I was so sad for that poor dog.
