Anyone have a good moving "To Do" checklist?
I am currently renting a room from my sister and her husband, but due to various forces acting upon me I plan to seek an apartment soon. I've moved quite a few times before, but it's always been hit-or-miss chaos. This time I'd like to do it right, because I'm too busy to disrupt my life for more than a few days, and I'd just like to try making it easy on myself, which is something I've never tried before.

Remember, I'm a 51 year old bachelor, so the refinements will probably not be observed. I'm just looking for a down and dirty "get it done" list.

3. here's a pretty good link
http://interiordec.about.com/od/moving/a/org_movetips.htm

and politicat gave me the best tip, pack from top to bottom and left to right then mark the boxes where the stuff came from. for example, NW corner-Kitchen

that way you can visualize where it "used" to be and know which box you stuck it in

also, pack a "right away" box with essentials like for a camping trip so you have the immediate needs covered (and don't forget toilet paper on top LOL)

5. If only it were that simple
Alas, I run a computer repair service from my home. I have to find a place at a reasonable price with a suitable room, I have to find the best high speed internet service available in that area, I have to notify all my clients of my move, I have a bunch of desks and tables to move and set up, I have a waterbed to drain, move, reassemble and refill, and on and on and on and on and on and....

If there is one thing I hate with a passion, it is MOVING.

6. not that different, but I reread your OP and see you don't have the new
place yet. that is probably your mental block right there. Well the old stand by is to make lists and break things down into managable parts, set short reasonable goals (I would recommend daily ones)and of course the first step is the hard one.

7. Pay someone else to pack. Really.

I'll NEVER more again without paying the movers to pack. No matter how much it costs.

'Course, I'm not single, so there's more stuff. But do it anyway.
