They were usually looking to find rubies or vanadium or whatever glorious lode they'd heard was still untapped, and they often seemed to be doing somewhat poorly, which didn't keep them from offering helpful advice.

One old guy I met in that era explained me with great sincerity that the key to a long healthy life was to drink cold water in the winter and hot water in the summer, and always to rise and set with the sun, the theory being that this discipline somehow avoided shocking the body. He also smoked and drank heavily.
