where are you from?
Just wondering if you may be my neighbor....Northeast PA, they now call us the foothills of the poconos.

34. there's...
there's a lot of scarred areas, from mining days, but there's lots of mountains, nice in fall, we live in a rural area now, lots of farms

the poconos is kinda of a joke...people use to vacation there, lots of resort type areas, people use to honeymoon there, still trying to maintain their tourist claim, but lots of people from NY and NJ moved there, made gated communities, and it takes 2 hrs to get from your house to Walmart, a quarter of a mile away....they call us the foothills, to draw city folks in to buy homes here

what about where you live?

44. They call us the sandhills.
In the western part of NC, there are the Appalachian mountains, then in the Charlotte area (still 100 miles west of me) it's the foothills. Where I live is between there and the coast. It's sandy in some areas in my home county. And there are areas where there is a lot of red sticky clay. As far as the scenery, I have to give this place credit. It is beautiful, especially up near the PeeDee River. This county alone has areas that look like low lying mountains and areas that look almost like a desert. The have begun logging at the river now and they are talking about putting in a similar resort type place there too. I hope they don't, but whether or not we will be able to stop them, I don't know.

Our main industry here right now seems to be the health industry. NAFTA turned this town into a ghost town back in the 90's. There used to be lots of cotton mills here, but that's fading into history. We have the largest Wal-Mart in the world, I think officially. I forget how many acres the actual floor of the store cover, but it's huge. I have to drive almost to the next city over to get to it, but where I live is the best part of this place. It's a little neighborhood called Roberdel. It's nice here. I could do without having a clay yard, but in time, I plan on dealing with that.

I have been hearing some parts of Texas have decent paying jobs, good job market, and the housing market is better for buyers. A friend of mine has a son that lives there, who built a large home for 100,000 a few years ago. I was always against moving far from my family, but you never know.

22. There are cheaper places to live in Texas than Austin.
In fact, San Antonio is much cheaper. They have some great hospitals down there, too. Lots of medical research there as well. I spent 20 years down there.

You can still get into a fairly nice house for about $150k here. Maybe $100k in San Antonio.

You might want to visit at the height of summer. It does get a tad warm down here. ;)

But, I do like it overall. It has issues (such as too many Republicans and faux cowboys), but it's a good place.

We lived very close to the castle and Princes Street Gardens so we often went there as children. One of my fondest memories is Italian Ice Cream cones with a cadbury flake bar standing in the ice cream. They were called 99's

From the Cadbury website:
An Ice Cream served in a cone with a Flake 99 is the UK's favourite ice cream. In the days of the monarchy in Italy the King had an elite guard consisting of 99 soldiers. Subsequently anything really special or first class was known as "99". When Cadbury launched its small Flake for ice creams in 1930, the UK ice cream industry was dominated by ex-pat Italians. So, to appeal to Italians we called our superb Flake a "99".

just a bit'o trivia for you :)

used to be a cute little artsy-fartsy liberal town. Then every mag from Forbes to Money put us on their "best places to live/retire list. It's gotten much less liberal, the McMansions have risen up, and it's getting really pricey to live here.
It's still beats the hell out of most of NC, except for Asheville maybe.

79. Another Pennsylvanian here.
Born and raised in Johnstown, now living in the wilds of Westmoreland County. It is very beautiful here, farms, rolling hills, quaint small towns. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
