Born at 4:31 this morning, 7 pounds 10.5 ounces 21.5 inches in length



Thanks so much for all the good wishes and thoughts as I asked y'alls opinions of various and sundry names.

She was born at a birthing center, not a hospital, with a Midwife, not an OB GYN. I cannot overstate how much I was overwhelmed by the staff's combination of absolute competence, respect for the Mom and family and sense of Joy at what we were all doing.

Susannah decided to try out her digestive system in a big way last night.....she was up from 11:00 to 3:00 struggling with gas and the sensations of digestion.....She's cool with it now..

Thank you so much. You know, rather than the rushing around, bright lights and assembly line feel of the two previous (also healthy infants) births, this birth really was given the chance to be the sort of life-affirming, quietly joyous and spiritual event that it truly ought to be. After the Midwife was sure that the cord wasn't wrapped around Susannah's neck, I got to guide my daughter out and place her gently on my wife's chest. There was a short cry, enough to let us know her breathing was up and running, clamps were placed in the appropriate places, and then I cut the cord. The Midwife collected the cord blood, which we're having saved, and Susannah nursed for two hours....
