You won't believe the things TSA took out of my sister's carry-on.
Edited on Sat Aug-12-06 08:33 AM by bertha katzenengel
Nail polish
Carmex
Day-Quil Gel Caps

As if that weren't enough, let me give you a picture of things at BWI Marshall.

Her departure time was 6:50 AM. We arrived at 5:00 AM. She went directly to the line for curb side check in.

At 6:30 AM, she was eight people from the front of the line. An airline rep went outside and said, "Anyone in this line for the 6:50 to LAX? You're about to miss your plane. Come with me." A bunch of people followed, but only one guy heard the rep say where to go. Everyone else followed that guy.

Some people got on the flight. My sister and others did not. They were told to get into the international line.

My sister got on a flight that leaves at 12:30 PM for Chicago, then she changes to another flight at 2:05 local time for Orange County.

She was to have been home by about 9:00 AM PDT. She'll now get home at 5:30 PM.

Is it just me, or are they going way overboard? :rhetorical:

1. Nail polish
is damned toxic ... sure wouldn't want someone opening one up on the plane near me. But the Carmex and Day-Quil? That's just ridiculous. :banghead: So now we have to have dry lips, dry eyes, dry throats, dehydrated bodies. Great. x(

2. I agree about the nail polish, but (1) my sister's not the type to use it
in an enclosed space -- she just had the damned bottle in her purse! -- and (2) taking it away because of the current plot? :banghead:

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

4. I agree with you there.
:banghead: I'm sure they'd find things in my purse to take away, even though I don't use makeup or perfume. Mostly it's moisturizing stuff -- eye drops, lip balm ...

I think it'll be a long time until I decide to fly again. It was hard enough before all this bullshit. x(

12. They'll take your eyedrops. They won't take solid lip balm - she had some
and they left it.

:eyes:

We're flying in December. Wonder if things will be relaxed by then. :doubt:

23. what is SOLID lip balm?
never heard of it, i've heard all lipsticks and chapsticks

this is their list:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/new-items.shtm#1

they say solid lip glosses are allowed, but lip gloss is of course not solid! they say specifically that you can't take carmex

29. "Solid" is chapstick, lipstick - a hard solid cylinder of wax or
petroleum or whatever it is.

10. I was on a flight once when some obnoxious godbitch did her nails
It's bad enough on land with ventilation; on a plane it was misery.

I've never been able to get into. The stench! :puke: I'm sure it's really bad on a plane.

3. This kind of stupid
action is just giving every one a false sense of security. I've also heard that you're not allowed to takes books on board. Now that truly upsets me. That's the best part about flying, catching up on reading, because the rest of the trip is always so boring.

5. Books are still allowed here, just not in England.
United Airlines' info on what is and is not allowed is below.

that her father's book was confiscated? I don't have a link. Could be the goons doing the checking don't know what to check for.

8. This is simply ludicrious
and being handled really poorly. Not making us a smidgen safer.

There are security loopholes a mile wide, such as the fact that someone who is on the Terrorist Watch List could waltz into an airport with a airline-generated boarding pass in a fake name, an easily-forged one in his real name (needs only be good enough to show the bored folks at the first checkpoint that it does match his passport)and his REAL passport, and no one would figure it up.

All TSA has to do to close this loophole is have airlines check AT THE GATE that everyone's passports & boarding passes still match immediately before they're scanned into the system

But no - instead they're making sure no gel-caps are in your carry on.......

Amazing

13. That has nothing to do with it. Honestly.
I doubt that even 5% of those this happens to would consider changing their vote because of it. I know my sister won't - she's liberal.

15. I'm glad I saw the world when I could.
I'm really not inclined to get on a plane anymore. There are still a few places I's like to go. Plus, mates in Europe I'd like to visit. Since I enjoy the summer swelter, I now take stay-at-home holidays. And by not flying, I gain two days that would have been lost hanging around airports while they play Be a'scared.

17. We're flying to Boston next Thursday
I don't know how I'll manage without my eye drops and lip gloss (for moisture, not for looks necessarily). My eyes get extremely dry. Do you think they'd confiscate my Burt's Bees beeswax lip balm if I take that onboard?

Just glad we're not flying out from the UK; don't know I'd manage without my iPod or books!!

19. I heard on npr last night that 'we haven't had any shoe bombers since
we all have to remove our shoes, so it's working' No one ever mentions that we never had shoe bombers before that idiot tried it either, and no one removed their shoes then... wouldn't it be smarter to have better screening for bomb materials? Dogs have quite the success rate, why can't we all just get sniffed really good?

I am just waiting for someone to come up with a pants bomb that is powder form, sewn into the very fiber of the pants...so we can all just show up at the airport naked. By that point, we'll be mailing our luggage three days in advance of flying since nothing will be allowed in cargo or carry-on.

25. we didn't even have a shoe bomber when we did
you know, that is what is so funny about it, the dude's shoe didn't light, he got tackled while he was farting around finding out that james bond stuff works in the movies not in real life

i would like to see one bit of evidence that these magical gatorade cans could have exploded or caused any real damage

i bet they would have gone pfffttt! just like the dreaded shoe bomb

what we have forgotten is the shoe bomb never even worked!

spent tons of bucks to fly in relative uncomfortableness.... "C'mon folks..ante up...make it easy on yourselves" I would have a hard time not calling them fuckwads and end up getting arrested or something stupid like that. Idiots. :eyes: It's not just you.

What was she going to do, make some passengers slightly drowsy before enacting her terrorist coup?

Jesus Christ.

31. Now that's completely unfair!
Day Quil says right on the box that it doesn't make you drowsy.

So if gels are explosive, then Day Quil capsules would be what? The equivalent of a 50 cent package of firecrackers?
