My cats are not feeling well.
One has had vomiting and diarrhea since Sunday and seemed to be getting better. The other has been sick since Tuesday and both seemed to be better yesterday. This morning I took them to the vet, they both seemed okay and had a round of shots and now have the diarrhea again and both are just very tired and laying around (more than normal) .... is this normal after shots? or should I be worried that they have something more serious?

2. Thank you Peggy!
It is amazing how I can be so worried about my cats... I was never a "pet person" until I adopted kitty.... I spent $165.00 at the vet today (for a check-up and shots for both) - which is almost half of my take home for the week... I would have called myself crazy a couple of years ago...

4. My cats sleep almost 12 hours straight after getting shots.
Then again sometimes they sleep a pretty long time without getting shots. But they do sleep slightly more after getting their shots. It makes them sore, ya know. Hopefully, that's all that is wrong. It wouldn't hurt to post this in the Pets Group, because DU'ers are the most intelligent people when it comes to these matters, especially in the Pets Group. I think there are a couple of vets that hang out there.

Hope your babies start feeling better really soon and that they check up really soon with the loose stools. Please give them a  for me.

Diarrhea & Vomiting: When to See Your Veterinarian

If you have outdoor cats, a neighbor who may have had pesticide sprayed or fertilizer, could also be the culprit.Changing anti-freeze is dangerous to cats and dogs. tastes sweet to them, but is leathal. A careless neighbor could have spilled some.

I also once almost lost a kitty to a spider bite. If your basement is unfinished it could be a problem too.

7. thank you.
The article is helpful.

I haven't been letting them outside unless I am outside, and they are staying in my yard, so I'm pretty confident they didn't injest any poisons.

They did see the Vet yesterday morning for shots. I also had a stool sample tested.

9. Did you tell the vet they had been sick?
My vet normally will not do shots on a cat that has been recently sick. But in any case, a distemper shot in particular will often leave a cat acting lethargic and just kind of "lumpy" (as in laying around like a lump) for about 24 hours afterward. It's usually not anything to be too concerned about. But I do wonder why they were having the vomiting and diarrhea earlier in the week.

11. yes, I did tell her
One started getting sick on Sunday and I took a stool sample to the vet on Tuesday, that's when I set up the appointment for the shots. When I was there on Friday, I told her one seemed to be getting better and the other seemed to be getting sick Tuesday. I had switched their moist food and picked up some packets at the grocery store and then switched them back to Nutro, (plus I was giving them Natural Choice dry food and then switched to fur ball management dry food) so we all thought maybe that was the reason. They are still having soft stools tho, but not vomiting.

As far as the shots, I was hoping that was a side effect, that they get real tired, b/c I was really getting worried last night. While they both like to sleep a lot, my one cat wakes up easily and always meets me at the door, wants to play... but last night he was just not responsive. He just laid on the chair and looked up at us, when usually he would be playful.. Today he seems back to himself.

10. What do you feed them?
Edited on Sat Aug-12-06 12:22 PM by AirmensMom
Not to start the pet food wars again, but my cats can't tolerate any commercial food that contains grain, especially dry food. It was a constant problem for one of them and came on rather suddenly for the other one after a rabies vaccination. You might want to try a grain-free canned food, like Wellness, and see if they do better.

PS I hope they feel better soon. :loveya: :grouphug:

12. Usually I feed them Nutro
Natural Choice, Complete Care - Adult. Recently (3-4 weeks ago), I started mixing it with the Nutro Hair Ball management. Now it's all Hair Ball management. I also give them a packet of the moist Nutro a day. Last weekend, I picked up some soft packets from the Grocery Store... that is when they seemed to start getting sick. But now, they still have soft stools even tho they have been back on the Nutro for 3-4 days.

They might be having a bad reaction to all the food switches. Also, your post made me think, maybe their systems are just not liking the Hair Ball management food. Maybe I should start mixing it again with the Natural Choice, Complete Care again.
