1. remember Will Ferrell's "Neil Diamond: Behind the Music"?
"This next song, I wrote after I killed a drifter to get an erection." Then he starts into Forever in Blue Jeans.

That didn't make either of the SNL Best of Will Ferrell episodes. :(

3. can you believe I have actually seen him in concert?
It was under duress, though. I was forced to go with my parents when I was in junior high school.

His groupies scared me. Those women love the shit out of some Neil Diamond.

the dark side.

What a relief!

Every time I see it I want to buy the CD (Mom and Dad had the album and I wore it out). I chicken out each time - I just need to purchase it and sit back and listen....ahhhhhh

6. IMHO people don't give him enough credit
he's a very good writer. Many artists have had hits doing his tunes. I do prefer his older stuff, especially tracks he cut with Joe Osborn, Larry Knechtel, and Hal Blaine (the infamous Wrecking Crew, mega-prolific session players). Classic stuff.

7. My aunt was and still is a Neil Diamond groupie.
She's in her early 70s now, but 20 years ago, she and her friends would camp out for Neil Diamond tickets and went to all the shows they could in a five-state area. :P

10. just one reason...that I like Neil

Cracklin rosie, get on board
Were gonna ride till there aint no more to go
Taking it slow
Lord, dont you know
Have made me a time with a poor mans lady

Hitchin on a twilight train
Aint nothing here that I care to take along
Maybe a song
To sing when I want
Dont need to say please to no man for a happy tune

Oh, I love my rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me, we go in style
Cracklin rose, youre a store bought woman
You make me sing like a guitar hummin
So hang on to me, girl
Our song keeps runnin on

Play it now
Play it now, my baby

Cracklin rosie, make me a smile
Girl if it lasts for an hour, thats al right
We got all night
To set the world right
Find us a dream that dont ask no questions, yeah

Oh, I love my rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me, we go in style
Cracklin rose, youre a store-bought woman
You make me sing like a guitar hummin
So hang on to me, girl
Our song keeps runnin on

11. and there is always this

Hot August night
And the leaves hanging down
And the grass on the ground smellin' sweet
Move up the road to the outside of town
And the sound of that good gospel beat
Sits a ragged tent
Where there ain't no trees
And that gospel group tellin' you and me
It's Love, Brother Love, say
Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show
Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies
And ev'ryone goes, 'cause everyone knows
Brother Love's show

Room gets suddenly still
And when you'd almost bet
You could hear yourself sweat, he walks in
Eyes black as coal
And when he lifts his face
Ev'ry ear in the place is on him
Starting soft and slow
Like a small earthquake
And when he lets go,
Half the valley shakes

It's Love, Brother Love, say
Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show
Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies
And ev'ryone goes, 'cause everyone knows
Brother Love's show

Take my hand in yours,
Walk with me this day
In my heart I know, I will never stray
Halle, halle, halle, halle
Halle, halle, halle, halle
It's Love, Brother Love, say
Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show
Pack up the babies
And grab the old ladies and ev'ryone goes
I say, Love, Brother Love, say
Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show
Pack up the babies
And grab the old ladies and ev'ryone goes...

22. His live voice is almost gone, now.
And he definitely went off in the direction of cheese.

The Rick Rubin-produced album is really good, though.

20. I know it has been straightened out, but it's interesting that you thought
he was a Republican. Everything I've ever read about him (relating to politics) pointed in the opposite direction, and I knew of a number of his donations.

Personally, I think he's great, regardless of his politics.

21. Oh, yeah! "The Pot Smoker's Song"!
Pot, pot gimme some pot
Forget what you are,
You can be what you're not
High, high I wanna get high
You never give it up
If you give it a try...
La la la la

...followed by recorded spoken testimony from teenagers and others concerning their negative experiences with marijuana. It IS an anti-dope song, but you gotta love that chorus. So singable!

26. One thing Neil and Elton John have in common
The stuff both of them recorded for the UNI records label back in the 70's was genious on both counts. When that label was swallowed up by MCA, neither one was the same afterwards. Bizzare coincidence but true.
