Name a 'classic' movie you have NEVER seen
I have never seen "Casablanca". Never been a big Bogart fan, but I haven't avoided it on purpose. Just never got around to it.

3. I could add "Gone With The Wind" to mine too
I have seen bits and pieces, and it just rubs me the wrong way. "The Wizard of Oz" was the real classic of 1939.

I've seen a bunch (minored in cinema studies in college), but I've never actually seen the grand-daddy of the Hollywood blockbusters.

7. It's terribly overrated
It doesn't suck... but I could never rank it as one of the all-time greats. Richard Dreyfus is dependably good, and Roy Scheider gets the best line. But it never did a lot for me.

9. "Citizen Kane" is great
The well-known spoiler aside, it helps to know what a sonofabitch William Randolph Hearst was, for him to inspire the title character. Film school students will push the importance of its technical advances, but just for the historical/political angle alone, I enjoy the film.

11. Trivia about "Casablanca"
Did you know that Ronald Reagan was tapped to play Bogey's character? Bogart was never the first choice of WB execs at the time. Even though I haven't seen it beyond clips, I could NOT imagine that brain-dead twit in the fedora, saying goodbye to Ingrid Bergman, lol.

You aren't missing much with "The Sound of Music". I think 1965's best film was "Dr. Zhivago".

15. Some other trivia..
In those days the studios would make a ton of movies. They would just roll off assembly line like. "Casablanca" was just another movie of the many made that year. It just turned out to have everything right with it.

LOL about Reagan. Had he been in it, it would be a forgotten B movie.

Howard Koch, who wrote the final screenplay (it'd been written and re-written by the time he got it) also wrote "War of the Worlds" for Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre.

23. "The Exorcist" is a tad overrated
In its time, it was quite shocking, but it hasn't aged well. The cheap thrill for most is the head-spinning pea-soup vomiting scene. Besides that, it's just a young Linda Blair in cheesy makeup saying rude things in a croaky voice.

27. It was first released in theaters when I was 13, and I was too scared to
go to see it, even though most of my friends went to see it. One friend of mine got sick in the theater. I heard descriptions of the shocking scenes, so I feel like I've seen it even though I haven't. I probably will never see it, why bother to give myself nighmares unnecessarily?

35. I have seen it
Back in 1985 it was re-released for its 70th anniversary at a local arthouse theater, complete with a pre-movie lecture about its content and history, and a live piano player provided the music.

It was at once revolting and amazing. Technically ahead of its time, but the story was very, very difficult to absorb. A true artifact of where race relations were in America at the time.

There are a number of other ones I haven't seen that are classics, but I can never remember what they are. I know there's a list of a good ten to fifteen truly classics that I've never seen, and keep meaning to see, but always forget.

Casablanca, by the way, I fucking love. I say that as a huge Bogart fan, but also because the movie is simply perfectly done.

I still want to commit suicide with a cheese grater every time I hear 'These are some of my favorite things'. *Massive eye twitch.*

True story. My mom and I were talking about what movies we hate while listening to commercials on TV. I forget what she said (Some movie I had never heard of), but I said 'Sound of Music'. next commercial on TV was the 50th or 40th or something anniversary DVD set. I ran from the room.

Hmmmm.... I can't think of any great movie I've never seen....
