Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 05:03 PM by Sannum
If it was between flying, and throwing this investment away, or walking, I would be very tempted to go home. This new airport security rule is ridiculous. I will be damned if I throw away my MAC, Keihls, Bobbi Brown, Shumura, and various other potions that I keep in my bag. I don't even wear alot of makeup, so most of it is just maintains, so whoever thought of this bright idea, know that you are a total moron. My caviar eye cream, Stila lip gloss and LeMer creams are not a terrorist weapon.

1. its getting crazy
my friend tom had to give up his special forces zippo...that he got from his tour in vietnam...because of this rule. I think they take this way to seriously...

Tom had to give up a pretty important artifact of his life...it was nuts, this was at Tulsa international...

2. It is terrible
They could at least have a FedEx station nearby so you can have the option of shipping what you don't want to, or cannot afford to lose.

I swear that one day I am going to get a foot fungus from stepping on that nasty carpet without shoes. Ewwwwww.

the fedex idea, or some storage container of some sort. I was two hours away, when he called me about the zippo...and by the time I got there to pick it up, it was all ready in limbo...

15. I solve that problem by only flying with sandals or flip flops on
They tend to not make you take your shoes off if it's something as exposed as that. Hell, I travelled in March and wore slip on sandals

16. I tried that
and that never worked for me, I always had to take them off...the worst time I ever had was Jan of 2002, I went through salt lake airport, when the winter olympics kicked through...they did everything but a full cavity search, they searched us 3 different times...it was a pain.

65. Check out a program from a couple of years ago called...
"Why Planes Go Down." Scared the hell out of me, but made me smarter.

Think about if your plane DOES crash, and trying to crawl over flaming metal in a flimsy pair of flip flops, or God forbid these stupid stiletto heels that are all the rage right now.

Try to find a pair of tennies or something with no metal shanks in them and wear them when you fly. If anything DOES happen, you might have a fighting chance if something really bad happens.

Also-- ladies, don't wear pantyhose, try to wear long hair up, and DO NOT WEAR HAIRSPRAY on the flight.

77. I do that too, and switch to real shoes after the checkpoint.
Little sandals don't weigh much and they fit in one of the otherwise useless exterior stash pockets on my carry-on. I also carry the TSA guidelines on shoes in case I encounter an overly eager TSA worker.

11. He knew
he forgot to put it back in his check in baggage, he had two bags to be checked in, and he had to move weight from one bag to another, cause of this 50lb rule, and when he was moving items from one bag to another, he took the zippo out, and put it in his shirt pocket, and forgot to put it back when he was done shifting the items around....

But seriously? a 55 yr old vet, with busted up legs, being put through something like this?

8. I'm sorry, but THAT right there, is the most incredibly stupid
thing I've ever read.

I get rules (yet, can't seem to follow them well  ) but the guy could have probably easily confirmed who he was, having to give up his USfrikkinA Special Forces item, a treasure, no doubt...that's like telling a Senator to abandon his/her Congressional pin becuase it's f'ing sharp.

Sorry, but that shit pisses me off. Guy serves his country, and loses a cherished item because flubya is running this country straight into the ground.

and he did leave it with the claims office, but I do believe somebody pocketed it in a heart beat, it took me about 2 hours 15 minutes to get back to Tulsa international, and by then, the zippo was gone, and no trace of it could be found...:( Its not like we didn't give up without a fight...

I always use moisturiser when I fly just because it is so dry. I re-apply every hour because my skin is so weird. And as you said, it is nice to have deodorant and toothpaste to "freshen up" after a long flight.

6. I'm with ya
For work purposes, I often carry around a huge professional make up case. On some planes, it won't fit in the overhead bins, so I check it -- but at the door of the plane, NOT at check-in. I wonder if they're allowing that?

No way anyone's making me dump any of it. The case itself is $250, it's contents easily $700. I'm so glad I wasn't flying today -- some people on early flights got totally taken by surprise.

I like Bare Essentuals...I use it with MAC Studio Fix because with my rosacea I don't get the amount of coverage I want. But I love it! I am going to have to try the Chanel powder. My new obsession is Bobbi Brown lip gloss. It is a three step process, but I have it down to a science.

Of course, I got a bunch of their stuff free when I was working at a health food store. Now I usually just give a shopping list to my former coworker friends for the employee discount.

Like my hair texturizer is $25, but I like it better than anything else I've used, it smells great, and it lasts me about 6 months. So it's definitely worth the $25 to me.

56. The American Marketing Machine is alive and well, for sure! I used to use
all that overpriced stuff... and it's fun and smells nice and looks pretty and has lovely packaging and looks great when one is using it in the ladies room... but... I'd rather spend the $225 I have left over after buying up my fave products on a nice shirt, sweater, pair of jeans, towards the price of vacation to an exotic destination, etc... something more tangible and appreciated.

At the end of the day all that makeup does the same thing whether it costs $25 or $250. I'd rather stretch out my hard earned cash and make it worth the effort.

I love the Olay products, they're constistently fantastic. Store brand shampoos really do just as well as any developed by Aveda or Sebastian, and in most cases, far better. I adore the lip tints by Alba at Whole Foods. Not tested on animals, subtle, enhancing and protective of the lips. When I need to glam up, the Cover Girl long lasting lip colors are great. The Cover Girl foundation is fantastic! A little goes a long way for a whopping $8.

I used to spend THOUSANDS on grooming products. As I matured, I learned the value of the dollar. Now I buy sensibly and look better than ever.

78. Exactly. Just get informed about what's going on, what's restricted and
deal with it in a realistic manner.

It's just stuff. Compact, lipstick, mascara, a touch of concealer and a comb should manage even through a 10 hour transatlantic flight.

Deodorant? Get a mini roll-on.

Hairspray? Wear a headband.

Perfume? Oh well! Now that I know, I won't carry it in my purse, I'll pack it and just not smell QUITE lovely for a few moments... not that I worry about impressing airport personnel, right?

This really isn't that hard. Just stay informed.

22. But my jeans make my ass look so CUTE!
I prefer to spend more money on things and have less of it, since usually (there are exceptions) the more you spend on shoes, clothes and products, the more they last. My Seven and RocknRepublic jeans are my favorites because the fit is so great. There is no comparison to the Gap. I have great quality things. I would rather save for months and months for one handbag than to buy one and have to replace it because the lesser quality bag fell apart. I have had the same pair of sunglasses for 4 years simply because they are well made. The investment is worth it for me.:)

I think I once spent over $40.

It's a guy thing, I guess.

Prices like that are not just about quality. A former girlfriend who did quality control for a clothing manufacturer took me through Nordstroms one day and showed me how there is no relationship between the quality of clothing construction and price. Single-needle seams versus overlock, etc. It is mostly marketing.

35. It really isn't
The OP wears what's called "department store makeup"--the kind you go to a cosmetics counter in a place like Macy's or Belk's to buy.

It's much more expensive than "drugstore" makeup--the kind they sell at Target. It also works better.

$250 worth of this makeup fits in a moderately-sized bag.

The Betaseron I need for my MS is always in my carry-on (temps in hold too extreme).

I usually just carry a note from my doctor in my purse, but the medicine only has a label on the outer part of the big box. I'll have to detach it and bring it with me. The individual doses are not marked.

the freeze 24/7 alone is $125 and that is only one product -- i believe your la mer skin cream is similarly priced

w. air fare so low (to people who are decent bargain hunters) it makes sense to walk away from the flight if your choice is to have your stuff stolen right in front of you (excuse me, "confiscated") or stolen/broken by baggage handlers (we've had 3 rounds of arrests at MSY of baggage thieves and scammers)

sure some "earth mothers" in the 60s wore it but to call them "progressive" because they were "earth mothers" is just silly, since their ideals are anything but progressive -- their only concern seemed to be a neurosis about appearance -- women who spend all their time in front of a mirror ain't going anywhere in this life or doing anything to help uplift other women

61. there is nothing progressive abt being afraid of technology
who are these "progressive" women who are afraid of looking younger, being pain free, and having more goals than life than being a milk bottle for a screaming baby

i think some here need a dictionary, there IS a difference between "regressive" and "progressive"

the natural woman in 1900 was dead, at age 43, often in childbirth, often as a grandmother -- at age 43 as she started spawning at age 13 to 16

a woman's life as designed by nature is no life, it is slavery to biological functions

i'm sorry that there are still women who don't want any more than to be a womb and a milk bottle, but i thank god that my mother and grandmother wanted more than that for me

everyone has the right to choose to be a slave but when you try to impose slavery on ME merely because of my female chromosomes you had better be prepared to bring your lunch

and yeah having the respect for myself and those who love me to maintain the physical plant, that seems pretty basic to me -- indeed, it's a pretty clearcut sign of clinical depression when women (and men also!) stop taking care of their appearance

no healthy animal in a state of nature neglects the appearance, it is a mental illness and in the case of clinical depression a cruel illness that has killed some of my friends

68. Geez.

You can be a slave to more than just babies, genius. Like the overinflated female "ideal" of beauty involved in a drawerful of products, for instance. :eyes:

I'm glad that thought didn't occur only to me. It seems that someone who doesn't want to enslave women w/ babies wouldn't want to enslave them to their appearance. Unless of course, freedom from babies gives one more time/money/effort to devote to one's appearance.

76. Which I don't begrudge necessarily.
I used to like to look good too.

But chronic illness tends to make you value other things besides how you look. I guess some folks haven't had to deal with that yet.

75. No one is trying to impose slavery on you. Taking care of one's
appearance does not necessarily require carrying $250.00 worth of cosmetics in you purse. If that's what you prefer to do, by all means, it is your choice. However, I find it grossly unfair for you to characterize anyone who doesn't subscribe to your standards of maintaining their personal appearance as being clinically depressed or afraid of technology.

My makeup and skin care products cost under $30.00. I wear very little makeup, mainly a moisturizer with sunscreen and just a little color for my brows and lashes. I'll admit that I haven't been carded for about 15 years, but considering that I am 60 years old, I'm not too surprised or disappointed by that. I consider myself to be a healthy animal and don't think that using a minimum of beauty aids constitutes neglect of my appearance.

Also, from one who has been a "womb and a milk bottle", what do you have against women who have babies and breast feed them? Isn't that also a matter of choice in this day and age?

49. My grandma had to give them all of her PENS!
I like to carry a Mont Blanc with me. If it was a choice between giving that up and getting on a plane, that plane could go BYE-BYE for all I care!

She also had to give up all her perfume and moisturizer.

She said a man nearby was FURIOUS at having to throw out an expensive bottle of wine he had bought.

50. How come you can check stuff at the bank
and the post office and the hotel but you can't check stuff at the airport?

They could easily put in little boxes like safety deposit boxes, give you a key, and ask you when you were returning so they could have an idea of when to throw the item out. They might even be able to make money on it storing the stuff for 10 bucks a week or something....

52. Yeah, me too, and this would really suck
Luckily my long-distance relationship is now over (he's moved up here) so we're no longer flying all the time.

Not being able to take bottled water on the plane would also really, really bite.

My mom and I were talking about this very thing this afternoon - god, between the two of us, we were adding up just how much we carry around in our purses that they'd confiscate. Ugh. x(

53. What really pissed me off today was the footage of people being
forced to throw away SO MUCH stuff without any sort of warning. Trash cans full of personal items that just a few hours before, were perfectly acceptable to fly with....

73. We are talking about peoples lives here.
Yea it sucks, but I'm not THAT upset they are trying to make things safer if a plot like that could be carried out. Before 9/11 people would have bitched about not being able to bring their pocket knife on board, shoot they probably still bitch about it.
Check the items you can't bring, ship them to where you are going or buy what you can when you get there. I spend alot of money on my Bare Essentials makeup too so when I fly in a few weeks I will pack it in my suitcase the best I can to avoid theft. I think they are getting a little carried away but there's nothing we can do about it, except to try and make the best of it.

79. Your original post made me laugh because "product" is the term used for
"fireworks" in the fireworks display industry. As in, "We'll set up the tubes today and drop the product in tomorrow," meaning insert the actual fireworks in tomorrow. And, "Make sure you have no product on you when you leave the area."
So when you typed, "I usually carry around $250 worth of makeup and "product" in my bag," I laughed, picturing you strolling through the airport with a few lipsticks and a whole bunch of fireworks in the bag.
