What music have you heard recently?
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 01:31 PM by mvd
None today, but yesterday I listened to the Essex Green's Cannibal Sea again, and these:

Gin Blossoms - Major Lodge Victory (at the AOL full album listening party) - this is a breezy CD. Perhaps too much so. Ok for casual listening, but seems a little contrived in the way it harkens back to a time in the 90s when simple rock was big. Grade: C+

Four songs from Meg & Dia at their Myspace. I didn't care for their voices, and the music was a bit Evanescence light (I love the new Evanescence single BTW.) Grade for those songs: C

The Concretes - samples from their latest one, In Colour. It's ornate pop that I think I'd love.

For a bonus, here's my current best of 2006 list. I haven't determined yet what will be A+ and A. But I'll try to keep the A+s around an undisclosed percentage of the total number of albums I hear:

Dixie Chicks - Taking The Long Way
The Wreckers - Stand Still, Look Pretty
Belle And Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
Pearl Jam - self-titled
Margot & Nuclear So & So's - Dust of Retreat
Josh Ritter - Animal Years
Neil Young - Living With War
Cat Power - The Greatest
Damone - Out Here All Night
Pink - I'm Not Dead
Gomez - How We Operate
Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac
Julie Roberts - Men & Mascara
The Corrs - Home
Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out Of This Country
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood
Susan Cagle - The Subway Recordings
Ingrid Michaelson - Girls & Boys
Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat
Guster - Ganging Up on the Sun
Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope
Holly Brook - Like Blood Like Honey
Nina Gordon - Bleeding Heart Graffiti
Paul Simon - Surprise
Rainer Maria - Catastrophe Brings Us Together
The Essex Green - Cannibal Sea
Some Girls - Crushing Love
The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers
Tom Petty - Highway Companion
Mojave 3 - Puzzles Like You

1. I won't be posting again after this session until after..
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 03:24 PM by mvd
the weekend sometime, but rest assured that I'll be listening a lot to Nina Gordon's Bleeding Heart Graffiti! I pre-ordered it, but amazon.com never gets it to you on Tuesday unless you pay more for shipping. Now it will be tomorrow at the earliest - and $2.98 is their regular shipping. I think I'll start buying some at stores.

2. Myself. Lots of me.
Elvis songs. Spent Monday and Tuesday -- in two bouts that lasted about six hours and eleven hours, respectively -- recording myself. 'Twas a marathon. And then I had to mix them all. I'm still recovering... :D

Here's my blog entry from a couple months back, documenting my top 10 of the first six months of 2006:

Not as political as his recent ones, but very high quality.

8. Well, Nick did get a good review in the Guardian, which..
surprised me. I'm not a fan, but I like some very poppy stuff like Cheyenne Kimball and All American Rejects.

11. LOL.. Cheyenne's sound is better than Ashlee's, Hilary's,
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 03:46 PM by mvd
and Lindsay's IMO. And a couple others I even forget. She's too young for me to like THAT way, but I give her credit for standing out musically so young. Really enjoy her stuff.

Brie Larson is also very good teen pop IMO.

13. Oh, God. Ashlee Simpson is horrible.
Her voice...eew. And how she's trying to be JUST LIKE JESSICA now. Double ew. Hilary Duff. Just no. She looks like a damn bobblehead now. Ew. And Lindsay Lohan is just...wow.

:puke:

And do I even have to go into why I think Paris Hilton's "voice" sucks...

14. Lindsay has a couple songs I like, but most of her stuff..
could be better. If she could only keep up the propulsivesness found on the song "Speak."

Oh geez, I give pop a chance, but I'm sure I won't like Paris's CD. I already dislike the first song.

9. totally bi-polar, veering wildly between ska/reggae and whatever
kind of music it is that makes you want to kill people.

Mostly Desmond Dekker, Maytals, Melodians, some Marcia Griffiths and Rita Marely, then onto Disturbed/Avenged Sevenfold/Limp Bizkit, etc.
It's quite a ride, I'm exhausted. Don't know what is going on with my mood these days.

22. One kick
Grades for the albums I've heard most recently:

Holly Brook - Like Blood, Like Honey: A-, a very pretty mix of Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos's quirkiness.

Heard these on the Full Album Listening page from AOL -

Joanna - This Crazy Life: A-, very good voice and diversity of sound. A better Pat Benatar mixed with some modern R&B.

Paris Hilton - Paris: F! My first F grade of the year. It makes Britney Spears look brilliant. There's nothing as irresistible as Britney's "Baby One More Time," "Toxic," or "Brave New Girl" - and Paris's voice is so weak that it can't even carry the tunes along.

My Nina Gordon CD still hasn't gotten here! I asked Amazon about it.

29. And I heard the new Christina Aguilera CD (disc 1) at MTV.com
She's grown into her sound at last, but the problem is, I don't really like that sound. Her voice just doesn't come naturally IMO. And disc 1 ended on a cloying note with "Thank You."

But certainly their own bands. The Weepies are a bit more traditional in style. Thanks for the Hem recommendation!
